Hello everyone,

I have a few questions for the wood and painting experts.

Last week, I had our wooden windows and wooden shutters renovated by a professional painter, but I’m not entirely satisfied with the result.

He used a Cetol Novatech Next stain.

What went wrong here, and how can this be fixed?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Although he is quite right about the distance itself
I would agree. A 50 m (164 feet) distance looks great. 😀

@TE: Should I stop by and check on the „painter“?

What’s the point of the comment?
I simply pointed out that the relevant regulations for assessing defects actually specify minimum distances (in my opinion 2m (6.5 feet) for windows, although that might only apply to scratches on the glass). Just like there are acceptable tolerances for dimensional accuracy or joint widths. There’s no need to make a joke out of it.
Besides, I also mentioned that, in my assessment, this still seems to be substandard workmanship.

The painter is from the region, approximately 20 km (12 miles) away, and found online through his own website.

The offer included the following agreement:
Remove or sand off loose old coatings, fill damaged areas on the south-facing door, prime exposed bare wood, then apply 1 to 2 full coats of Cetol Novatech next, depending on the condition, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, in the existing color.

This concerns 4 windows, 2 balcony doors, 3 shutters, 2 wooden doors, and 1 garage door.

The painter prepared the offer, and we accepted it without discussion, assuming he was skilled in his craft.

Today, he was only briefly on site again and wanted to “make quick repairs”. He then somewhat nervously said he would need an additional day to complete the work, that it would not be worthwhile for him, and left. As he was leaving, he mentioned that he might reconsider whether he will come back at all, since it would only be a visual and not a technical issue, meaning the wood was protected...?

Since I have an old wooden front door that also needs painting, I recently requested a quote for it. The price was around 700 euros (just for the one door). Your painter will probably have estimated more than 3, rather 3 or 4 full days for the mentioned work, right? In my opinion, he can’t make up for that in just one day.

He was there for one and a half working days. On the very first day, instead of arriving in the morning as agreed, he came only at midday and then went straight to lunch...

With such blatant shoddy workmanship, there is no need to discuss tolerances when evaluating the work.

Every single part should be thrown right back at him,
