Hello everyone,

I have a few questions for the wood and painting experts.

Last week, I had our wooden windows and wooden shutters renovated by a professional painter, but I’m not entirely satisfied with the result.

He used a Cetol Novatech Next stain.

What went wrong here, and how can this be fixed?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

No, but he is pushing for payment.
What should I do?
Request corrections and withhold payment. It looks like the apprentice worked on the first day and the master was on vacation...

I have just painted our house several times, and it doesn’t look that bad anywhere. And I have never done this before.

This is definitely not right, and his explanation about getting close is a complete joke.

Water can also penetrate in the areas where the paint is heavily peeling, from what it looks like. So this is not only a cosmetic issue but also a complete failure in terms of wood protection.

I’m really sorry.

Definitely do not pay and seek help.

A few more details. The shutters were either not sanded or not sanded properly. The old fully chipped areas are still visible, as are cracks. The paint application is uneven, and the metal parts should not be painted. It really looks as if a hobbyist repainted them while they were already installed.

Yes, that is very clearly visible. It is really unfortunate that this was delivered by a company specialized in this area.

Even though the work was undoubtedly done very poorly, may I ask how you found the painter? Was it a local contractor from your area, through the Yellow Pages, or online? Perhaps you could also share the scope of the job (just painting over, sanding, staining/varnishing). Maybe the number of shutters and the total contract value as well? This information might help others better assess similar projects and avoid mistakes when hiring contractors.

He is actually quite right about the gap itself. In window installation, there are very precisely defined tolerances.
Nevertheless, this is unacceptable, and it is noticeable even from a distance of 2m (6.5 feet).
