ᐅ Drywall on OSB boards, cracks?

Currently, the attic floor consists of OSB boards.
The walls and ceilings will be covered with gypsum board. Both an architect and the drywall installer said this is a very good combination.
Because of a minor issue, I started researching and found a lot of contradictory information out there.
Among other things, it is said that the expansion rates of OSB and gypsum board are so different that cracks often occur.
I don’t want to believe that. 😎

My question:
Is there anyone here who has cracks in the gypsum board that can be traced back to the OSB substrate?

on OSB boards.

My question is specifically for those who have direct experience with drywall on OSB. 🙂

The installation of drywall on OSB panels largely depends on what finish you plan to apply to the drywall.

Will it be wallpaper or just paint? If non-woven fabric is applied, I see less risk compared to just painting. However, some stress cracks are almost unavoidable. Actually, the combination of OSB and drywall is generally not a problem.

In your house, though, it is different. Firstly, it’s an attic, and secondly, the structure is timber-framed. This will cause movement. Cracking is almost inevitable here. Therefore, I would recommend applying a crack-bridging fabric to the drywall.

I have been using a combination like this for 15 years. When wallpaper is applied, no cracks are visible. With textured plaster, cracks only appear in the corners, depending on the season. Fiberboards are even better than regular drywall panels. However, I have a timber frame extension attached to an old stone house.

I will never understand why summer heat protection is neglected in the roof,
but as described, the OSB board will absorb the water vapor. Depending on how much accumulates,
the wood will start to swell, which can cause cracks in the drywall.
OSB does not absorb water vapor and is vapor-tight. OSB does not swell either.

I was told that OSB acts like a vapor barrier.

Yes and no, the vapor tightness depends on the OSB quality. To my knowledge, OSB 4 (with a higher resin content) is vapor tight, sometimes also OSB 3. So it can be approved as a vapor barrier. OSB 1 and 2 are not vapor tight. As always, this is just layman knowledge, please verify for yourself.
