ᐅ Kitchen appliances you wouldn’t want to live without?

Hello everyone,

Like many others, I am building a new house and sooner or later I will need to plan the kitchen as well.
In my current rental apartment, I have a standard fridge-freezer combination stacked vertically (80cm (31.5 inches) wide), a ceramic cooktop, and a combined oven with fan.
I also use countertop appliances like an electric kettle, sous-vide stick, microwave, vacuum sealer, and a food processor (Bosch).

I cook regularly and enjoy trying new recipes but haven’t really looked into new appliances yet.
I should also mention that I am planning an outdoor kitchen with a grill station and deep fryer, so while indoor grilling will still be an option, it can be done outside as well. The frying will definitely be outside due to the smell.

But what would you say is so great that you absolutely need to have it?

Cheers

A microwave arranged for convenient access and a raised dishwasher 🙂

Yes, the elevated dishwasher! I’m in favor of that too. 😀
And the "waste bins under the countertop." Although not an appliance, these are simply trash cans located right under the work surface instead of in the lower drawers. They compete in the ranking of practical features alongside the dishwasher.

I bought a Lidl Cuisine Monsieur yesterday (but it hasn’t arrived yet). Hoping that the “Guided Cooking” feature will help me cook more myself and especially healthier. Does anyone have experience with this, or alternatively with the TM?

I have the Monsieur Cuisine (here it’s called Monsieur Hubert or Hubi) and I love it. Every Sunday for boiling eggs, otherwise for cooking potatoes/rice, purees, sauces, great doughs, liqueurs, spice pastes, steaming... yes, it’s used several times a week (not only as a chopper, just for that it would be way too annoying to clean...).

Regarding this topic, I can add a meat grinder. Since no meat is bought here, only self-hunted game is processed, it’s simply a must-have and my only option to make my beloved Bolognese. And then a vacuum sealer is necessary too; otherwise, you can’t properly pack all the meat.

Essentially not for cooking full dishes, but rather as a helper appliance. Perfect for that! In Thermomix demonstrations – which is how such a device is usually promoted – a complete menu is always prepared. However, in practice, I have not seen that (cooking, steaming vegetables and fish simultaneously) happen.

I’m not familiar with TM demonstrations, but I have cooked sauce on the bottom and steamed dumplings on top, or boiled potatoes underneath and steamed broccoli above... it doesn’t happen that often, but that’s mainly because I don’t cook like that. The alternative would be having two pots on the stove, which happens just as rarely.
If I were to cook, for example, a risotto, I’d do it in the Hubi, but I almost never cook risotto anyway.
Do you know what I mean?

What doesn’t really work are one-pot pasta dishes or recipes where I don’t want too much mushy texture (I’m thinking of, for example, vegetable stir-fries), because the blade, even when rotating in reverse, cuts the ingredients.

So yes, it’s an assistant. But pots and stove are assistants too; everything we’re talking about here is an assistant, right?
Hopefully, no one is promoting the device as a personal chef in these kinds of demonstrations.

Oh yes – exactly that. You basically prepare a complete meal with soup, main course, and dessert in the TM. All without much effort and everything cooking at the same time. Meanwhile, the “regular” kitchen stays unused. That’s how the TM is marketed, and it also justifies the price comparable to a small car 😉
