Hello everyone,
during my house construction, the sidewalk slabs were damaged by excavation work carried out by the contractors.
The city already asked me back in November 2019 to restore the sidewalk to a "safe" condition.
Over the past two years, there were several reasons why I couldn’t focus on the sidewalk... but this year it’s scheduled to be paved along with my driveway, etc.
Now a resident reported me to the city and, of course, also took photos.
As a result, I received a letter from the city giving me a 10-day deadline to repair the sidewalk.
10 days?
Is this deadline period legally valid? I will call a few companies and ask, but I don’t think I’ll get an on-site appointment within the next 10 days.
And yes, maybe I neglected the issue, but I really intended to finally take care of it this year.
What would you do?
Request an extension of the deadline?

After 2.5 years, I can also understand that the neighbors and the local authority are no longer very amused. Whether you intended to do it or not doesn’t really matter. After such a long time, surely no one among the neighbors or the local authority still believes that.

Is such a deadline legally valid? You have already let almost 2.5 years pass. Do it immediately and be glad you’re not facing a fine.titoz schrieb:

Request an extension of the deadline? It’s solely your own fault 😉. “Maybe neglected” is putting it mildly. If the city had taken 2.5 years to grant your building permit / planning permission, how would you respond? You can try your luck with the city regarding the extension request. However, you should show good faith and at least include a binding offer.
Okay, you are right, of course nothing has happened in the past 2.5 years. A quote was obtained back then... but it was never acted upon.
However, I have never received a deadline before. This is the first deadline and it is only 10 days. A company just told me that they can’t even manage to send a quote within 10 days 🙂
Thank you for your opinion.

Do you just want to make the path "safe" for now? That might be possible with a temporary solution. I would suggest asking your friendly general contractor / main contractor / architect if they know someone who could lend you some steel plates or something similar for a while.
