Hello everyone,

In two weeks, the flooring will be installed! We chose a nice cork floor from Wicanders with a PU decorative coating.

Now we are thinking about which baseboards to install.

What experiences have you had with baseboards?

- Which manufacturer or type did you choose?

- Are DIY store baseboards okay?

- White or a color similar to the floor?

- Click system?

- Is there anything you were especially happy with and would recommend?

I’m looking forward to any advice or tips 🙂

We chose classic solid wood in white. However, with oak parquet and light-colored walls. A similar or matching floor color can also look good, but for us it felt a bit "old school," and we had seen that a lot in previous rental properties. In my opinion, having a contrasting color looks a bit more lively and modern, but of course, that’s a matter of personal taste.

DIY store baseboards are probably acceptable depending on the product, but some are even more expensive than better quality options from online suppliers.

I used to always use click systems, but now the wood baseboards are simply glued.

Recommendation: solid wood and, if possible, with a groove ("slot") to guide cables behind it.

Recommendation: solid wood and preferably with a groove for cable management behind it.

Downside of gluing: If you need to run cables behind the baseboard later, it becomes difficult to remove it without causing damage, correct?

Otherwise, I mainly see advantages with gluing. Definitely the easiest method.

How did you do the corners? Mitered cuts or with special corner pieces?

I also once had cork parquet flooring and cut my own baseboards from the cork parquet, beveling the top edge (then treated the baseboards again with varnish). I attached them with thin screws that were slightly countersunk, making them nearly invisible. This was a special case since the house was very old and everything was crooked and uneven, so standard baseboards were not a real solution. It was a lot of work, but I thought the result was “good.” Now I have solid wood baseboards painted white, with various wall colors ranging from white to gray to more colorful shades, paired with dark hardwood flooring. I really like this combination and would find it fitting to use with cork flooring as well.

Veneered baseboards are rubbish (after just three wipes they already look bad), just like those plastic baseboards with a “wood” appearance.

Foil-covered baseboards are junk (after wiping three times they already look bad), just like those plastic baseboards with a "wood" finish.

I’m browsing at the moment and notice that prices at hardware stores can easily be around €4.50 / m² (about $4.80 / ft²). Online, you can find solid wood baseboards offered by various online shops for roughly €2.50 to €4.00 / m² (about $2.70 to $4.30 / ft²).

I just checked. On 08.08.2021, we paid 827.8 € for 264 meters (866 feet) of 58 x 16 mm (2.3 x 0.6 inches) AMBE wooden slats, white lacquered.
