ᐅ Hardwired water connection for a side-by-side refrigerator?

Hello,

we have now completed the planning of our kitchen.

Now we are working on the installation plan for our builder.

1. Question: How many water connections are usually installed in a kitchen? One for the sink and one for the dishwasher, or do they typically share one?

2. Question: What do you think about a side-by-side refrigerator with a fixed water connection?

We believe a fixed water connection is the better and more convenient solution for a refrigerator with an ice maker.

Can the refrigerator be connected to the same water line, or does it definitely need its own separate fixed water connection?

The dishwasher is about 80cm (31 inches) away from the refrigerator, and the sink is about 150cm (59 inches) away. So, for the refrigerator, we would need a hose of about 150cm (59 inches). Is that still short enough?

Is there also an AquaStop option available for the refrigerator hose?

You’re forgetting people like us who not only use ice cubes in the summer but draw water from the connection multiple times daily. So don’t always assume others are like you; individual advice is needed. If we had a tank, I would be so annoyed having to refill it several times a day—it’s already frustrating enough with the coffee machine. 😉

The point is more about presenting different perspectives. A forum thrives on exchange, including subjective opinions. The original poster can now read your view, mine, and hopefully many others to get a well-rounded picture. For example, I don’t see why I should get water from the fridge if I can just open the tap for cold water (outside of summer).

Some people simply prefer to drink water at 4°C (39°F) rather than at 10°C (50°F) or even 15°C (59°F), which is closer to room temperature. Although medically, this might not be considered the healthiest option.

That's exactly why I mentioned it.

And @Tolentino has already given one reason: it’s cooler. The second reason (for us) is the filter.

No, we’ll buy the side-by-side refrigerator ourselves since it won’t be a built-in appliance.

So my question is: in new builds, does the kitchen usually have two water connections or just one for the sink and dishwasher?

Can the refrigerator be connected to that, or does it definitely need its own connection?
Distance from refrigerator to water connection is 150–170 cm max (59–67 inches)

Just buy a fresh water line and a Y valve.
We also planned our fridge with a direct water connection; there’s nothing more convenient than using the water dispenser every day.
But why didn’t you include this connection in the kitchen planning from the start? Then the plumber could have installed it right there.

I've always been the ice cube type! So it's a luxury I enjoy and don't want to go without anymore.
Especially since these refrigerators offer a lot of space and are cheaper than built-in units. But keep in mind, they protrude about 10cm (4 inches) in front of the kitchen cabinets.

@Mycraft Thanks, is the distance not too long yet?

I had read that the hose should be as short as possible.

What would you recommend more: a refrigerator with a fixed water connection or a water tank?

Advantages of the connection: no refilling needed and it never runs out, better comfort.

Advantage of the water tank: no risk of a burst pipe.

Can you think of any other points?

I’ll never understand who on earth consumes so many ice cubes that they need a dedicated water connection for that :-D

We also use a lot of ice cubes in summer—for daily cooling of the 5-liter (1.3-gallon) water dispenser, for example, and for other things too. But two ice cube trays in the freezer are enough for us.

I’m not sure how much maintenance a refrigerator with an ice maker requires, but I’d save myself the effort and expense.
