The stones on the balcony of my house, which is just over 25 years old, are chipping and cracking; see pictures. Something new is needed. What would you recommend? Are there low-maintenance synthetic coverings that can be installed here? The balcony faces west and has no roof, so it is fully exposed to the weather.

Was this installed on a garage? No, it is on the flat roof of the living room. You can see it in the foreground of my profile picture.

How are the decking boards fixed? There is a protective mat laid over the roofing membrane. Then comes the substructure, supported by decking pads for height adjustment, followed by the WPC decking boards. Here is another photo from the construction phase.

Heidi196516 Jan 2022 19:59I have now received the first quote from a carpenter (assembly services around the house and garden) for the balcony area of just 5 sqm (54 sq ft):
Removal of existing tiles and screed, new sealing with bitumen membrane, new installation of BPC decking boards: all together including VAT around €4,600 with the option that the price may increase daily. Is this normal?

Is this normal? Is this normal? Yes! Smaller areas are always more expensive per square meter. It is also a complex job involving many different steps and is not easy to do correctly. For example, the waterproofing must be properly executed, which involves a lot of detailed work on a small area.
