zizou89Hello everyone,
we are considering removing the pitched roof and building a new one. The options are either a hip roof, a shed roof, or a flat roof. Now the question is, what makes the most sense for us and, above all, what do you estimate the costs might be for each type of roof?
You can find photos of the house/roof attached. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
The house is 9 meters wide and 8 meters long. The upper floor at the back, facing the garden, has a full ceiling height (not sure if that’s the correct term, but the room height is fully utilized). The front side has a slope, which really takes up a lot of space that we need.
Additionally, we want to remove the brickwork and either replace it or plaster over the bricks to achieve a significantly more modern look.
I appreciate any feedback.
Thank you!!!

Attached is the cross-section.Let the street-facing side of the roof, including the extension, bend down at the main ridge beam across the full width, similar to a catslide dormer—that will be more than enough.zizou89 schrieb:

We would like to extend and have considered painting the red bricks anthracite or white. There’s no need to remove the bricks; I assume the exterior walls are solid masonry. If they were brick slips—which they are not—that might be feasible, but still not advisable. The extension can be much more nicely integrated if it is designed harmoniously. By the way: these bricks are still very fashionable—hard to find a trendier look; just have a look at new constructions!https://www.instagram.com/11antgmxde/

Thank you all for the feedback!
Unfortunately, we are very emotionally attached to the house. A complete demolition or selling is not an option.
Our question is how to create a reasonably coherent look with the extension.
We don’t like the red bricks personally.
We have considered building the extension and then plastering everything, so it would look like a single unit. And then extending the roof along the entire length?
Inside will not be a problem at all; we are not willing to make many compromises there.
But outside, we still can't imagine how it will look with an extension. We don’t want to just attach something; it should look harmonious!
We are also aware that this will be particularly expensive!

For example, I regret having built a hip roof. A gable roof (with a not too steep pitch) would have been a bit cheaper, better for photovoltaic panels (more space), and would have provided more storage space in the attic.
Painting the brick cladding seems the most reasonable option to me, but I don’t understand why an extension requires a new roof. Maybe you could provide photos and drawings to help clarify this?

Hey, it doesn’t require a new roof. It was just an idea to create a more cohesive look. The extension is planned to be two stories. I still have no clear idea how to make it look harmonious. Perhaps matching a dormer and the extension visually could improve the appearance!
We are seriously considering rendering the facade. Painting the brickwork COULD also look totally ridiculous, right?
