Hello everyone,
we are about to start building our new house and have chosen a local construction company. Today, by chance, we visited a shell construction site by this company (in a larger new development area). In our rather inexperienced eyes, the workmanship there did not seem as neat as in another shell construction site we also saw in the same development.
Is it acceptable for a wall, for example, to be built without staggered bricks/blocks? Is what we saw still within normal standards? We are just a bit unsure.
Thank you for your expert opinion and best regards, Christine

Counter question: Would it sound too arrogant to say, "where I don’t see any shoddy workmanship, there isn’t any"? 🙂That’s certainly true! Let’s relax and wait for what’s to come!
Thanks for your assessments!

That’s exactly the question – is this shoddy workmanship? ;-)##2, 5, 7, 9
The more you ask, the more misleading statements you will get.
I would strongly emphasize again: not everything that looks like poor workmanship actually is. You should also consider your choice of words carefully (shoddy workmanship, construction stop…), and not automatically hire a building inspector for the entire duration of the construction out of excessive fear!
It might also help to read up a bit before starting, for example over the holidays, to gain some knowledge about the upcoming house construction instead of questioning everything. As mentioned before: this is a structural shell, not the assembly of a clockwork.
Otherwise, you both might suffer several heart attacks during your house build 😉

I would strongly emphasize again: not everything that looks like poor workmanship actually is. You should also consider your exact choice of words (poor workmanship, building stop…) and not immediately hire a building surveyor for the entire construction period just because you’re too anxious!!!
It might also help to read up a bit in advance during the Christmas holidays about the upcoming house construction, so you gain some knowledge before questioning everything. As already mentioned: this is a shell construction phase, not assembling a clock.
Otherwise, you both might experience several heart attacks during your house build 😉That wasn’t my choice of words either, I was referring to the previous answer. All good!
We have already discussed bringing in a building surveyor; definitely a sensible addition.
No one wants heart attacks. 😉 😎

We are building with Euro Massiv Bau GmbH from Duisburg. I just looked at their website and apparently had bookmarked it before – unfortunately, the search function here is often only somewhat helpful in finding where I might have written about them previously. You probably can’t really discourage anyone from working with them, but I have found better verifiable information about other contractors on their websites. At least here there are customer reviews with full names, not just generic ones like Smiths or Johnsons, so they are somewhat verifiable. Regarding solid construction, the site only says that it is something really great but unfortunately provides no detailed description of construction services or concrete photo references. At least they appear to be a medium-sized company with a manageable business scale. I can’t give them a clear “B” grade, but despite the somewhat questionable company name that fits more of a shady risk-taker, the company gives me a solid, down-to-earth impression.

I wouldn’t necessarily advise against them, but I have found better verifiable information about other builders on their sites. At least here there are customer reviews with full names, not just generic ones like Smith or Jones, so they’re somewhat verifiable. Regarding solid construction, I only found claims that it’s something really great, but no detailed scope of work or concrete photo references. It seems to be a medium-sized company with a manageable operational size. I can’t give a strong “good” rating, but despite the somewhat sketchy-sounding company name, the business gives me a solid, down-to-earth impression.Thank you for your assessment! We already have very detailed information available, and I’m happy to share our experiences. I could, for example, post the scope of work description here in the forum. So far, I’ve only found unanswered inquiries here, but I’ll do my best to provide some additional information.

I could, for example, upload the scope of construction work here in the forum. Personally, I find it more convenient to read it than receiving a PDF by email (I’m also 11ant on gmx de), whereas image files are generally easier to view here in the forum, especially for mobile users.

Although I advise homebuilders, I am currently a tenant myself with no plans to change that in the near future. Unfortunately, discussion about a company with such a name is complicated by the fact that the term “Massiv” makes it like searching for a needle in a haystack.
