Hello everyone,

we are about to start building our new house and have chosen a local construction company. Today, by chance, we visited a shell construction site by this company (in a larger new development area). In our rather inexperienced eyes, the workmanship there did not seem as neat as in another shell construction site we also saw in the same development.

Is it acceptable for a wall, for example, to be built without staggered bricks/blocks? Is what we saw still within normal standards? We are just a bit unsure.

Thank you for your expert opinion and best regards, Christine

Unfinished wall made of white concrete blocks with cables on a construction site

Concrete wall corner with cracks and spalling on the concrete blocks

Interior wall corner: left white wall, right gray tiles, red border on the right

Construction site: brown pipe with holes, red clamp, white block wall, green hose reel.

Construction site scene: stack of aerated concrete blocks with cracks, metal pipe visible on the left.

The few chips on the stones are nothing unusual. The lack of bonding, however, is more noticeable. I’m not really happy with it, and it will eventually crack. I would make a complaint. This is not acceptable workmanship.

It is always important to be on site every day and check everything. When the construction company realizes that someone is paying attention, these kinds of issues happen less often. But most people think ordering a house is like ordering a car: pick it up and you’re done.

It seems to me that this only happened with a section of the wall aligned with a chimney (?)

The wall is inside the room and appears to be a projection to separate the kitchen from the living area.
As I mentioned: this is not our shell construction, but it is from the company we want to build with.

It looks rather above average to me. Have you already "searched" for the company here, or would you like to name it? Then I’d be happy to share my opinion about them.

I’m happy to name it. This company has been asked about here several times before, but there don’t seem to be any experiences shared. So far, we are very satisfied with the consulting, the quote, their availability, and their overall professionalism! And as I said: true beginners here ;-) You don’t see this type of shell construction very often....
We are building with Euro Massiv Bau GmbH from Duisburg.
