Hello, I would like to ask for your opinion on whether you can visually identify asbestos in this mortar? It was around a stainless steel chimney door. The door seemed relatively new to me, but I am not sure. I could not see any fibers with the naked eye, but I am not an expert. I understand that a laboratory analysis might be necessary.

However, I would really appreciate a visual assessment. Thank you!

Does this look like asbestos-containing material to you?

You cannot tell just by looking. But your question shows some lack of knowledge.

Asbestos itself is not harmful. ONLY when there are loose asbestos fibers present, ist can it be hazardous to health. Throw that stuff away and take a deep breath. If the material looks like this, you might want to be concerned:

Of course, my question reveals a lack of knowledge! That is 100% the premise of my question—otherwise, I would already know the answer myself....

What did you buy it as, and where are your photos of the crumbling pieces from?

I removed a stainless steel flue door from the oil heating system (using a hammer and chisel). These are parts of the lining around the chimney door. The heating system was manufactured in 1996. The door could have been installed around the same time.

1. Tiny crumbs without much dust = not a real problem, even if asbestos
2. 1996 = asbestos banned since 1993

Then just trust the answer and don’t lose sleep over it. You even believe that a single fiber could be fatal.
