ᐅ To build up the plot or not?

Hello everyone,

Our plot is located between a street at the front and a private driveway at the rear. The private driveway cannot be used for access or the driveway entrance. Access can only be made from the street.

Now the question is at what height we should position the house. Should we align it with the street level or with the private driveway?

If we align with the private driveway, we would need to add 80-100cm (31-39 inches) of fill, and the entrance to the house would likely require several steps. Also, the driveway to the parking area would probably be quite steep.

If we align with the street, the rear part of the plot would remain slightly below the level of the private driveway.

The street slopes upwards to the west. The neighbor to the west has adapted his house to the houses in the second row and his house is positioned quite high. His driveway is also very steep.

The neighbor to the north has leveled his plot completely and placed his house level with the street.

Our plot is in the middle. What would be the most sensible approach?

I have attached the elevation plan, hopefully it is clear.

Edit: The building project would be a single-family house without a basement!

How exactly are they doing that?

They are being replaced. I didn’t check closely, but I think I saw a grinder being used. So they definitely won’t just be filling the holes with filler or something like that 😀

Asking questions doesn’t help, the workers only speak Polish. I’ll take a closer look in daylight soon 🙂

A color difference between the solid facing bricks and the hollow facing bricks (obviously not from the same batch) could, in individual cases and with the small "holes" here in a relatively inconspicuous area, justify mixing a filler with an engobe coating. However, this solution should be discussed so that the people involved at both ends of the hotline share the same native language. This means it could indeed be explained by a Polish person, but not by a Dane; technically, the procedures are otherwise the same in the countries of the construction worker, the manufacturer, and the building materials supplier.

My first thought (in the sense of @11ant): Just ask in Polish...
With Google Translate tools, hand gestures, and a bit of effort, it should work – loud laughter not excluded.

I highly value personal conversations, even if it means using gestures. But not everyone is like that, and you know that feeling when you realize the person you’re talking to simply isn’t interested in having a conversation?

That’s exactly how the guys were today, just like the previous times. So I don’t force myself on them because, in the end, they’re only carrying out orders from someone else.

I’ll take a closer look in the next few days and can then report what exactly was done. If I don’t notice anything, I’ll ask our site manager. But I’m sure it will be fine!

Yes, I know that feeling, even from myself. People have varying needs when it comes to communication and being left alone. Sometimes it’s a basic personality trait, other times situational. There are many ways to invite someone to communicate, but despite all efforts, it’s not always welcomed. Everyone knows this from a special form of communication: flirting. It doesn’t always work out, and that’s okay.

That’s very well put.
In my opinion, the guys just wanted to be left alone and get their work done.

My site manager just called me and informed me that the bricks were replaced. Apparently, the building materials supplier accidentally didn’t deliver the ordered bricks to the site, so now the correct bricks could be installed.

As soon as I get to the site during daylight, I’ll take a look myself 🙂
