ᐅ Smart Home Video Doorbell Recommendation

Hello,

We are currently building a semi-detached house and will install a standard traditional doorbell.

Later, we want to replace it with a smart video doorbell.

Which smart video doorbell would you recommend? It should meet the following criteria:

No cloud storage – all data should remain within my own network.
The doorbell sound should ring as usual on the existing chime, and additionally ring on my phone and my wife's phone (it's enough if this works only when we are connected to Wi-Fi; it does not need to work when we are away).
The doorbell should continue to ring even if there is currently no Wi-Fi connection.
No monthly fees.

What is the legal situation? We probably won't be able to prevent the street from being recorded in the background. Is this a problem or illegal? The recording will only be temporary and only when someone rings the bell.

I would be very interested as well 🙂
Unfortunately, you can hardly find anything about the VDM10 on YouTube that isn’t directly from the manufacturer.
I would also appreciate any experiences!

I bought the system and it has been sitting here for weeks.
So far, the regular doorbell is still in use because internet and network have only been available in the house for the past two weeks, and I haven’t had a chance to install the system yet 🙂

Once I get it up and running, I will report back.

Is it possible to operate the Metzler VDM10 without an indoor unit? For me, notifications and calls to an iPhone would be sufficient.

No, it is not possible; I asked the manufacturer. The forwarding to the mobile phone is managed by the indoor unit, making it a mandatory part of the system. Any additional cameras, if desired, should also be purchased directly from the manufacturer since a private communication protocol is used between the devices. Third-party providers are generally not compatible. It is also best to use a switch from the manufacturer because with a managed switch, communication between devices may be limited, or ports might be blocked (unless you can configure the switch yourself accordingly). This has pros and cons. The advantage is increased security in data exchange between the devices, while the downside is limited compatibility with third-party providers.
The door station only creates a snapshot; it does not record video of the visitor who is currently ringing. The manufacturer restricts this due to privacy regulations. Foreign providers seem less concerned about this. Snapshots are stored only within the system and possibly on the phone; storing them on an FTP server or similar is not possible, and the SD card slot for storage is disabled in Germany.

If you only want notifications on your iPhone, a Shelly Uni would be the right choice. Just search for Shelly Uni on YouTube, and you’ll find a good video about the doorbell, Shelly, and Alexa. It costs about 10€, you can’t get cheaper than that.

A simple push notification is a bit too limited for me; I’d like to be able to talk to the visitor at the door and ideally also see them. But for that, using the phone is enough. That’s what I meant 😉
