ᐅ Engineered flooring as an alternative to hardwood - buying guide and manufacturers

Good morning everyone,

There has already been a lot of discussion about different types of design flooring. We saw the Modular One from Parador at friends’ houses and were very impressed. However, there are very mixed opinions about this flooring, so I wanted to check if there are also more “premium” floors from other manufacturers? What are your experiences, and which brands would you recommend?

Since many criticize the use of “plastic,” here are our reasons for choosing this type of flooring: We currently live in an apartment with prefinished parquet. The apartment is 5 years old and we are very careful to avoid dents and scratches. Still, the floor is quite delicate and soft, so we want to find an alternative because of our very young children. Tiles are not an option due to the lack of “warmth underfoot.” Maybe when the kids are older, we can switch back to parquet, at least in the living room. I actually found that idea quite appealing.

We imagine a slightly lightened oak tone, but not a whitewashed color.

I would appreciate your opinions, tips, criticism, and suggestions.

Best regards

Does it have impact sound insulation integrated?
Ours has 4.3 mm plus 5 mm impact sound insulation (separate).

Is it made of plastic and flexible? How does that work?
What exactly is the structure? Is it supposed to be just clipped in?
And in which rooms is it planned to be installed?

I think luxury vinyl flooring is overpriced. But if you like the look...
Did you visit only one floor showroom? I’d find that too little. We went to at least five different specialized dealers and home improvement stores.

No, we went to the installer from the general contractor, who gave us an offer of 7,500 for vinyl from Tarkett including installation for the ground floor only.

We were at a big home improvement store with a large flooring display, where a specialist salesperson from a well-known laminate brand was working. He basically advised against everything, including the flooring from his own employer, and suggested tiles instead. But we definitely don’t want tiles!

Yes, that could be. I didn’t ask about the impact sound insulation any further. I had noted down the rest. I could ask about that again.

No, it’s not flexible. We saw vinyl floors where you could bend the planks, but this one is rigid, so you can’t bend it or anything like that.

It is a click-lock luxury vinyl plank floor. It will be installed everywhere except the bathroom, guest toilet, utility room, and HVAC room.

Funny guy. I thought they are usually paid at least partly on commission. Maybe he has two contracts running?
The price for a general contractor floor installer is actually quite good. If you like the appearance, that’s what matters.

If you have “fallen in love” with this soil: congratulations.

Most vinyl floors are flexible, including ours.

For us, this was a clear advantage since we are installing it ourselves and wanted to avoid the hassle of cutting.

Still, the floor is heavier than laminate.

This results in a more solid and substantial feel underfoot; the floor handles slight unevenness well without rattling or creaking.

At first, we considered the Parador Modular One with integrated impact sound insulation.

However, we ruled it out because it required cutting.

And installing impact sound insulation is only a very small part of the entire job 😉
