Hello everyone,

We are currently choosing roof tiles from the house supplier (I’ve already learned here that the word "concrete" is used, and that the common term "roof tile" usually refers to clay tiles, or is that not correct?).

The options are exclusively products from the company Nelskamp. First of all, this manufacturer is mentioned here in the forum as a reliable and good producer, right?
The standard range includes the shapes Sigma pan, Crown pan, S pan, and Finkenbeiner pan. All are in the Longlife matte style. According to the manufacturer’s website, these are all concrete tiles. Is there a good reason to switch to clay tiles, which would also justify the higher cost?
Does anyone know these tile shapes and can explain the differences? I have looked at them myself but hardly see any difference. The only thought I had from physics class is that the S pan, due to its edge instead of a wave, might be more vulnerable to wind?
In terms of appearance, it’s actually not important to me—the roof has such a low pitch that I wouldn’t really see it anyway. So you could say, if there is a traditional tile shape that lasts long due to extensive experience and accumulates little dirt, I’m open to suggestions.

Many thanks for your input and experiences.

Well, let’s put it this way: if someone asks kindly and it’s within my means, I’ll do what I can. And I just happened to have a little time between two appointments. So: you’re welcome!

P.S.: Unfortunately, I can’t see where you’re building from your profile. Otherwise, I might have invited you for an on-site roof inspection... 😉

😀 That would really be a bit too much 😀. I’ve now ordered some samples; I think you just have to see the colors in person...

Absolutely. Our builder had all models available during the selection appointment, including those with additional costs.

Well, the profile only asks for the state or region. You don’t have to enter exact geographic coordinates 😉.

For the sake of clarity, I would like to present the results of the sample order here:

Four roof tile samples in dark grey, granite, matte black, glossy black on a stone floor.

It is difficult to accurately represent the true color in photos, but the color differences are clearly visible here as well.

I ordered the roof tiles from Nelskamp, labeled in the pictures as follows (note that not all tiles are available in all colors):
- SIGMA TILE (dark grey LONGLIFE matte)
- KRONEN TILE (granite LONGLIFE matte)
- FINKENBERGER TILE (black LONGLIFE matte)
- S TILE (black LONGLIFE glossy)

Glossy is probably not cost-neutral for us, but I wanted to see the difference anyway. I have to say, I wouldn’t describe it as truly glossy. I had imagined a highly polished, mirror-like black, but in reality, it’s safe to say it’s just a little less matte than the others 😀, so not really glossy. The color gradation between black and grey is very distinct in real life; black is really black and not a very dark grey, which I like. The glossy black is a nice shade darker than the matte black, and if we actually decide on black (really black) windows, this would be our first choice for the glossy black. The difference was also clearly visible when the tiles were wet from rain; the glossy tile also appeared a bit darker there.

By the way, the SIGMA tile has become our favorite, while the S tile also appealed to us. Here, depending on the angle of the light and the slight notch, the roof could look completely different. The SIGMA tile is just more uniform and rounder, simply more to my taste...

I have BRAAS roof tiles, but before making my choice, I probably would have also chosen the SIGMA, just much lighter in color. But anyway, it's a matter of personal taste.

Regarding durability, I asked around and here is my summary: If you want your roof to last 40 years, roof tiles are sufficient; if you want it to last 100 years, go with clay tiles. Since I don’t plan to live there for even 40 years, roof tiles were enough for me.

Long after making this decision and after the roof was already installed (since March), a solar panel installer pointed out something I didn’t know and hadn’t read anywhere before: When adding a photovoltaic system later on, roof tiles are less complicated because you can simply lift the tiles, screw the module mounts directly to the rafters, and then put the tiles back in place. With clay tiles, this is not possible—you have to cut the tiles. I’m not sure if this applies to all types.

Here is a drone photo of my roof:
