Hello,
we are currently building a house and have reached the topic of telephone, internet, and TV.
In our current rental apartment, we have a 1GB cable connection from Vodafone, with which we are overall very satisfied.
However, I feel like I would be locked into one provider forever if we now only install the cable connection.

Is it possible to have a cable connection installed, for example through Vodafone, and simultaneously have a DSL connection through Telekom? Or would that be a waste of money?

We could then watch TV via cable or via the satellite dish, right?

Thank you very much for your help and best regards,
Andreas

What exactly is fiber optic cable? Can you receive DSL or cable internet with it, or both?
"Fiber optic" and "cable" refer to the physical connection types, while DSL is a technology that uses copper twisted pair wiring to deliver internet and other services like TV to your home.
Fiber optic offers the highest data transmission speeds and is technically very advanced. The data is transmitted through light pulses.
Cable provides the second-highest transmission speeds. It uses the traditional cable TV network. The cables are coaxial (inner conductor and shielding) and are well suited for digital transmission.
DSL works quite well nowadays, even though the unshielded copper twisted pair wires were not originally designed for digital transmission. Interestingly, the data transmission itself is still analog.

If you have fiber optic internet, you can switch to other providers as well.

Unfortunately, this statement is not entirely accurate in general terms. The fiber optic networks in Germany still form quite a patchwork, and there is not yet a contract with every provider. At both our current and future addresses, fiber optic internet is only available through the network operator, not through Telekom or similar companies. This is expected to change eventually, but we are more likely talking about years rather than months.

Telekom now offers TV without a receiver in the "Smart" plans. The requirement is to have a playback device that can install the corresponding app. The app does not support recording, time-shifted TV, etc.

However, this can potentially reduce the number of receivers needed.

I would stick with the Vodafone cable and avoid laying Telekom copper cables alongside it. I use Vodafone cable and am much more satisfied than with Telekom (both from my past experience and from friends currently), as my average actual speed is significantly closer to the "up to" speed. With a cable connection, you can also choose a different telephone provider—not via DSL, but regarding SIP accounts, meaning the phone numbers and plans.

I use Vodafone cable and am much more satisfied than I was with Telekom (both myself in the past and acquaintances currently), as my average actual speed is much closer to the advertised "up to" speed. Even with cable connection, you can choose a different telephone provider—not via DSL, but in terms of SIP accounts, i.e., phone numbers and tariffs.

However, cable as a "shared medium" is more prone to congestion than copper.
If you are unlucky and move to a poorly routed area, you can experience endless issues (latency, misrouting, download speed, etc.). As an average Netflix and email user, you might not always notice this immediately, but if you rely on a stable and fully functional connection for important reasons, I would always choose copper or fiber optic, or at least have it prepared.

If such a thing even exists.
The telecom provider only offers DSL at 6 Mbit here or a hybrid connection.
Fiber optic... hahahahahahaha
Only Vodafone remains.
Now I'm considering whether a business plan might at least get some priority or something like that...
