Hello,
we are currently building a house and have reached the topic of telephone, internet, and TV.
In our current rental apartment, we have a 1GB cable connection from Vodafone, with which we are overall very satisfied.
However, I feel like I would be locked into one provider forever if we now only install the cable connection.

Is it possible to have a cable connection installed, for example through Vodafone, and simultaneously have a DSL connection through Telekom? Or would that be a waste of money?

We could then watch TV via cable or via the satellite dish, right?

Thank you very much for your help and best regards,
Andreas

Ah, okay. But that is just the inner protective tube. The actual fiber is only about one millimeter (0.04 inches) thick and extremely flexible.

Maybe I was also given the wrong explanation. I had seen this cable and asked here what it could be, as I couldn't identify it. It was said here that it is fiber optic. However, I might have misunderstood.

Still, it certainly can’t hurt. Whether the cable itself is installed or just the sheath. Connecting it should be quite easy, right?

Yes, because then the fiber only needs to be blown in and laid. For us, the civil engineering work and the entry into the house took just under five weeks, while blowing in and laying the fiber took only two days.

It was the same for us that the people handling the rough work didn’t necessarily know all the details. 😀

Good evening everyone, from the past I am familiar with the terms DSL (telephone cable, TAE connector) and cable. What exactly is fiber optic cable, and can you receive DSL or cable with it, or both? We currently still rent and use a satellite dish with a subsequent switch for TV. From the switch, coaxial cables run in a star pattern to the built-in satellite receivers of the TVs, so no additional receiver is needed. Internet and landline are provided via 1&1 DSL and a FritzBox 7490, with internet access only via Wi-Fi.

In the announcement for the new housing development where we are building, it says: "Fiber optic cables will be installed in the new development to ensure a fast internet connection." I want to get internet, landline, and TV from a single provider in the future, without a satellite dish.

I spoke with Telekom today, and they said that 1000 Mbit/s (around 1 Gbps) internet is available at the address. Telekom is, I think, DSL? Fiber optic cable will be pulled and will terminate in a distribution point (APL) in the basement or utility room. The APL is connected to a fiber optic modem via fiber optic cable, and then the FritzBox is connected to the fiber modem with an Ethernet cable. I hope I took down everything correctly??? If you want to watch TV through this, you need a receiver or smart TV that you pay for monthly. For four TVs, that would mean four receivers. Why can’t you use the receivers built into the TVs?

I also tried to get information from Vodafone, which was a total fiasco. No competent answers, only general rambling. Someone said I should call Kabel Deutschland since I live in Bavaria, but I didn’t have a phone number or address. A dumb question: Can I get Vodafone from the fiber optic cable installed in the new development, or do they have their own fiber optic cable? Does Vodafone also require a receiver or smart TV, or can you use the receivers built into the TV with them?

Many questions, I hope you can help.

Thanks in advance

I know it sounds strange, but these are actually fibers made of flexible glass that transmit data optically. They are faster and significantly less lossy over longer distances compared to copper, which is used for DSL and cable.

Is Telekom basically DSL?

No. In Germany, anything above 250 Mbit/s is not considered DSL. For 1000 Mbit/s, I would expect fiber optic. Telekom operates the same way as other providers in that regard.

If you definitely want to use a Fritz!Box, then yes. 😉

Providers tend to use their own standards, which are rarely widely supported. At least that’s the case with Telekom.

Do you need a receiver or TV with Vodafone too?

It’s difficult without a TV.

If you have fast internet, simply use IPTV via a Smart TV. It also works with set-top boxes and apps on smartphones and tablets.
If you have fiber optic internet, you can also switch to other providers. It works like with a telephone/DSL line. Providers like Telekom, Vodafone, etc. use the line and pay a certain fee to the owner of the line.
