Hello,

we have purchased a newly built semi-detached house with 150 sqm (1,615 sq ft).

I wanted to ask which furniture stores in NRW you would recommend for us.

We want to renew or buy new furniture for the entire interior.

Which furniture stores can you recommend?

The furniture should meet the following criteria:
- good quality, "high-end"
- aesthetically pleasing
- durable
- easy to assemble (no drilling, just screwing together)
- prices should be affordable for an average budget

So, nothing cheap like Poco or Roller, but also not extremely expensive.

We especially enjoyed buying furniture from Tellmann in Mönchengladbach. Some pieces came from Knuffmann in Neuss, others from Genske, Lambert, Tischhelden, and Design Post—all from Cologne—as well as Refri in Weert and MYCS in Düsseldorf.

From January 17th to 23rd, the International Furniture Fair IMM takes place again in Cologne. There, for example, we found our light switch system by GI Gambarelli (which no electrician here knows), desks (Müller Design), and dining tables (Venjakob), which we purchased as mentioned above—plus a hot tub (Softub) and ceramic tableware (Ono Mao). The ideas you can gather there are invaluable. It’s better to plan for two days or visit the halls with a focused catalog. The selection is enormous.

Buy only from people you connect with. The positive atmosphere during the purchase and the shared joy about the decision come home with you. That is worth a few extra dollars, because it is truly experienced quality of life. If you buy from an “a...hole” who offers the lowest price, you’ll end up sitting on your sofa thinking about that unpleasant person. That would be really foolish, wouldn’t it?

The furniture stores themselves are not so decisive.

At Tellmann in Mönchengladbach, I experienced what truly good advice means and how helpful someone can be who not only knows their showroom but also has a well-rounded overview of manufacturers and their portfolios. The Tellmanns (father and son) understood well what we like and—something quite rare—provided us with real added value. As said above: the positive buying atmosphere is still clearly noticeable in our home even after two years. The things simply bring more joy.

should look good

Fortunately, that is a matter of personal preference.

Ikea

Everyone has it. Many furniture lines work well to complement your furniture and are also highly recommended as starter furnishings. I still find some basic pieces there from time to time.

Zurbrügge, and Ostermann

I quickly looked up those two since they are not available here.

Also Höffner or XXXLutz, Hardeck, Uni-Polster (sofas, etc.) and local furniture stores (Rüsen, Dvorack are nearby for me -

Google shows the same products available at those stores as at Segmüller, XXXLutz, Home24, etc.
Here, they are called Möbel Kraft, Höffner, Dodenhof, Schulenburg, MöMax, Möbel Schulenburg, Optiwelt— they all offer similar furniture. From high-quality manufacturers to budget options like Roller. Mail-order companies like Otto and Baur also sell the same products.
You have to like all of that, of course.
We are lucky to have furniture stores near Hamburg that also sell individual pieces. Country style, modern, eccentric—all kinds. You can often find exactly the piece that fits, but you have to look around. Outlets for Impression furniture from Otto are, for example, included. Or modular tables where you can choose the top and table legs separately to your taste.
Some also offer online sales with freight shipping.
My recommendations include Riess-Ambiente (also represented on eBay and now on Otto), Möbelhaus Hamburg, Wäscherei (a bit more expensive), Made, WestwingNow, Maisondumonde, and some Danish and Dutch online stores. Wayfair also has good furniture if you don’t choose the cheapest options.
Regionally, there are often good independent furniture stores that are not part of chains. Just try searching locally on Maps and visit them.

Ok, thanks.
So it depends more on the furniture brand than on the furniture store.

Which brands can you recommend that offer good quality at a low to mid price range,
meaning good value for money?

I think you should first set a rough budget and then spend a day visiting furniture stores to get an idea of what a) you like and b) fits within your budget. How much are you planning to spend?

Good quality at a low price is always challenging because quality comes at a cost. And a good price-performance ratio is also relative.

You can find hundreds of furniture manufacturers that forum members like. However, there are many styles: modern minimalist, solid wood furniture, Asian-inspired, lacquer and steel, Bauhaus, and so on.

I really like the solid wood furniture from rs. Not for the entire place, but a nice piece here and there.
Otherwise, a variety of different things come into the house, just as ypg describes.

A silly question for the heavy users of this forum: is it common to start a new thread for every little detail? I’m used to having everything collected in one thread.

I see it differently. Some brands are excellent but less well-known, so they can easily be overlooked. Certain brands represent consistency and outstanding quality—some furniture designs date back decades and are still being produced, with replacement parts and upholstery available. These classics—assuming you don’t greedily buy a knockoff—are expensive but durable enough to become family heirlooms. That’s also a form of good value.

Above all, it’s important that you like the piece and have a good personal sense of its quality. Don’t buy anything that has a “new furniture odor.” Who would want to bring a stinky piece into their home?
