Dear fellow builders and seekers of advice,

we are currently beginning to work on electrical planning, lighting design, and similar topics. For now, we are using PowerPoint to transfer the floor plan and are adding various "markers" and icons.

Is there any freeware that could help us with this, or a PowerPoint icon set that is available? We have not been able to find anything. Regarding lighting design, we are also looking for a small software tool for simulation purposes. Does anyone know if there is freeware or perhaps manufacturer-provided planning tools that can be used?

Many thanks and best regards.

DIALux for (professional) lighting design and precise simulation. The software is free of charge.
It requires some time to learn, but once your house is modeled, you can visually display and calculate all kinds of lighting scenes.

For electrical planning, I used RedCad.
A very simple 2D planning software with a very short learning curve.
Unfortunately, it is not free.

As mentioned before, DIALux is the preferred choice for lighting design. However, I can't say much about the program itself, since at our company I usually consult the lighting specialists who work with it.

Great! That’s much more than I expected! Thank you.

Since we have a slope plot and our house is built along the slope, the rear part of the house slopes downward. At the top, we don’t follow the step down—this results in a higher ceiling height in the living/kitchen area on the ground floor at the back.

Coming from the main entrance, you can look all the way down over the small staircase (1.40m (4 ft 7 in)). Does anyone know how I can set this up in DiaLux? We want to illuminate the staircase, and the open hallway passes by the coffee bar on the way to the dining room—where we plan to create different lighting scenes.

Issue resolved. User error – was able to fix it using the cutting tool.
