ᐅ How can I set up Wi-Fi and telephone services, as well as technical installations, in the basement?

Hello everyone,

Since I am a complete beginner in the IT field, I’m asking for your help.

We are currently building a semi-detached house. Because of the underfloor heating, I have planned a CAT7 connection on every floor.

Now I’m wondering how I can later provide Wi-Fi and telephony throughout the house.

The incoming service line is located in the basement.

How can I distribute the telephony and Wi-Fi in the house using a FritzBox? I was thinking of installing an access point at the CAT7 outlets on every floor where needed. But how do I get the LAN connection there? Is it enough to connect the FritzBox in the basement to the network ports that end at the CAT7 outlets and then set up access points?

Also, I need to know how to connect a telephone (which will be located on the ground floor) to the FritzBox that is in the basement. Maybe Wi-Fi telephony?

Sorry for my awkwardness and many thanks for your help!

Oh man... I also work in IT, but networking has never really been my thing.
Even when I talk to network specialists on my projects, I rarely feel any wiser afterwards.

Can I use Unifi solutions effectively with Magenta TV? Keyword multicast?!

I spent a lot of time researching this. With Ubiquiti, you get that functionality with their Edge Switches. Unfortunately, there are hardly any user experiences available. That’s why I went with Cisco. It’s recommended a lot in the administrator forums and works perfectly here with Magenta TV. However, IGMP Snooping is disabled by default and needs to be enabled first.

Sorry if this thread is too old to reply to, but I’ll give it a try...

The wife acceptance factor was really only met by the Unifi devices. When you want to mount them high on the wall or ceiling, the Fritz repeaters/APs are just too ugly.

I’m not a fan of the AVM repeaters’ appearance for wall or ceiling mounting either.
Do you have any recommendations for an access point that is, after AVM repeaters, the next easiest to set up but still “nice-looking” and discreet for ceiling or wall installation? Preferably with PoE, since that’s less noticeable than using a power plug.
Am I already looking at Unifi under these conditions?

Visually, the AVM repeaters don’t appeal to me for mounting on a wall or ceiling.

What are your selection criteria?

Appearance: White, flat, without rod antennas, simple, unobtrusive
Technical: I first had to check on idealo to see what criteria exist 🙂 Wi-Fi speed, Wi-Fi standard, frequency bands, Wi-Fi features—I have to admit, I can’t really tell what counts as solid standard and what is high-end. So I would say: Something affordable for an average user who doesn’t want to dive deep, a real access point, not a repeater (which has been often discouraged here), compatible with Fritzbox (is that even necessary to mention?), LAN connection 1000 Mbit (1 Gbps).
For example, I would have said Netgear WAC505 or Ubiquiti UniFi Access Point AC Lite. But I’ve already read here that the setup with UniFi can be quite complicated.

Unifi is anything but complicated.
You need the Unifi Controller for initial setup and further provisioning. You can install it on a basic Windows laptop. It’s free. The purchasable controller only makes sense if you want to use the complete proprietary Unifi ecosystem for logging, monitoring, etc.
The access points themselves have a wizard that guides you through the installation. It’s really straightforward.
Mounted on the ceiling, it can look like this:

Modern kitchen with island, induction cooktop, coffee machine, and wall art.
