ᐅ Cooling with a heat pump through underfloor heating?

Hello everyone,

we are building a KfW 40 house with a Viessmann Vitocal 200-S heat pump and an 8 kW photovoltaic system.
The heat pump is also capable of cooling. The upgrade would cost 1000 € (only the heating installer, thermostats extra).

Is it generally worthwhile to cool using the heat pump? Just because it can does not necessarily mean it is practical.
How fast does a room cool down? Underfloor heating systems are usually quite slow in response.

Or does it make more sense to invest in an air conditioning system and operate it with the photovoltaic system on hot days?

Thanks and best regards

We are now in the second summer with our climate control system. We turn it on when the rooms start to heat up too much from the sun. Then, it stays on in almost all rooms (only when there is a sudden drop in outdoor temperature do we turn everything off temporarily). It all regulates itself. The setpoint is usually at 24°C (75°F), but the home automation sometimes adjusts it to 23°C (73°F) or 25°C (77°F), depending on how the house "reacts" to the outside temperatures.

This constant switching on and off really gets on our nerves. 😉

If it uses 200 kWh or more per year, then so be it. In winter, I don’t constantly turn off the heating when it gets too warm but let it adjust automatically (or you have a well-balanced underfloor heating system that works without a fixed setpoint).

@Dogma could you briefly explain the context of "cooling with a heat pump through underfloor heating"?

Oh, the forum sheriff is here... 🙄

Well... I have to defend him a bit.
There are tons of topics about air conditioners. But only one real thread about cooling with an air-to-water heat pump. I was glad to find this thread back then to read about experiences.
When half of the 20 pages end up discussing issues and findings related to air conditioners, it stops being enjoyable to read the thread.

Unfortunately, I can only report next year. But since my Panasonic system normally has this feature (which is actually standard for Panasonic), I will definitely test it next summer.

Well, there really aren’t any issues with air conditioning. System on = cold… end of story. So I don’t understand the objection. On the other hand, there are problems with cooling via underfloor heating since it is more of a mild effect, so posts in a thread about that would always have to predominate.
