ᐅ Satellite and/or cable?

Hello fellow homeowners,

Originally, I planned to rely entirely on satellite TV, but now I’m wondering if it would be better to also install a cable connection (here Unitymedia) before the house is built and all the utilities are laid. I’ve read about a flat fee of €199 (approximately $215). That would definitely be doable.

My initial plan was to install a satellite multiswitch on the roof and distribute the signal down to the basement from there. How could the cable connection be distributed from below so that I would only need to switch something in case of an emergency (for example, if the satellite dish stops working)?

Best regards

Satellite doesn’t work, so I should just connect the cable?
You do realize that you have to sign a contract with monthly fees with the cable provider, right? And pay for it while only using it in an emergency? In my opinion, that’s pointless.

It would make more sense the other way around: if the cable connection fails, connect the satellite.

Although the costs for both don’t really justify their use. If my satellite doesn’t work, I talk to people around me, read a book, listen to the radio, or do something else. :-)

Yes, that would of course only be an option if I actually have and pay for a monthly cable connection.
I’ve done some research now.
There are multiswitches that have an additional antenna input. The cable connection can be connected there.
However, I would probably need to have a separate cable installed from the basement to the roof (multiswitch).

I read here a lot that people have a cable connection for phone and internet but then use satellite TV.

That is actually much more expensive than a regular phone-DSL connection from providers like Telekom, Vodafone, etc.
Phone and internet might seem about $5 cheaper at first glance, but you still have to pay the basic fee for the cable connection. That makes it quite a bit more expensive overall.

Phone + internet might seem about 5 EUR cheaper at first glance, but you still have to pay the basic fee for the cable connection. That actually makes it quite a bit more expensive.

The cable connection itself has no basic fee at Unitymedia! For example, 2Play Plus with a 100,000 speed connection + unlimited phone calls costs only 30 EUR for two years. I can never get that deal from Telekom! So, eventually, the extra effort for the connection actually pays off.

OK, I had overlooked that. Of course, this is a great alternative to telecom providers and similar companies.

We didn’t even consider it because we don’t have cable. But even if we did, I wouldn’t have chosen it, as the monthly fees would have exceeded the one-time cost of the satellite system within just two years.

We have a good 90cm (35 inch) dish on the roof and are satisfied with it.
What’s the big deal if the reception occasionally cuts out? Just turn off the TV. It’s mostly garbage anyway. 😀
And cable, especially UnityMedia, is not immune to outages. I was a customer for 10 years and never had as many problems with an internet provider as I did with them when the connection went down.
During strong thunderstorms, the cable connection can fail as well.

Hello,

we don’t have UnityMedia here, but Kabel BW. After frequent disruptions in the first year, we now have a very stable phone and internet connection.

And I haven’t experienced it going down even once.

In principle, I would also install a satellite dish on the house but keep internet and phone over cable. However, since the effort for this dual installation is too great for me (we have a listed building, which I don’t want to spoil with a satellite dish, and I would have to dig a trench to the garage), we take everything from one provider.

There is occasional talk about the channels being encrypted via satellite as well. If that happens, then the monthly fees would also be pointless!

Best regards
