Hello everyone,
the title says it all. We are currently planning the electrical system for our new build.
The electrician has planned a Hager “technical center” with a multimedia panel. This is where the LAN cables will terminate. Additionally, I would like to install the router and a NAS (Synology 214play) there.
It looks quite neat and seems to fit everything needed, but does this make sense?
Today, I was wondering why I wasn’t offered a server cabinet.
What are your experiences? What makes more sense? How does it affect the cost?
I would be very grateful for some advice.
Christian

Which switch would you recommend?
Apart from a guest network and possibly a separate network for the camera, nothing else is planned for now.
The router is currently the standard one from Vodafone, but I am flexible. Internet-based phone service might also be planned. It is currently still running analog through one device.

Daniel-Sp17 Aug 2021 13:38Then you already have 3 networks (guest, camera IoT, main network). If you want to stick with the standard router, you will need a Layer 3 switch, which can route between the networks. However, you should do some research beforehand to avoid problems with the configuration.

So the third network would be nice, but it’s not absolutely necessary if I could save that much on costs. It’s quite simple: A basic switch with, say, 16 ports can be found for under 50 EUR (about 55 USD). Even with basic management features like VLANs, it doesn’t have to cost three figures. PoE doubles these costs but saves you from needing additional cables and power supplies. However, 100 EUR (around 110 USD) shouldn’t be considered “significantly” more expensive, even if it’s double the price. 😉 Just make sure that the PoE capability of your devices matches the switch’s specifications.

Daniel-Sp17 Aug 2021 15:26Does it really have to be a 48-port switch? 800 € is quite a significant amount.
