ᐅ Which garden fence provides privacy screening?

Hello

We have purchased a semi-detached house.

After completion, we want to install a fence around our garden (we hope to have friendly neighbors who will share the costs).

We need about 55m (180 feet) of fencing.

We want the entire fence to have privacy screening and be between 1.6 and 1.8m (5.2 and 5.9 feet) high (this is legally allowed in our area).

Which type of fence would you recommend? We had thought about the standard welded wire mesh fence panels, but the privacy strips for these are quite expensive.

Is there a more affordable option, possibly with a different type of fence?

Requirements for the fence:

No maintenance (so no wood)
Privacy screening
Height between 1.6 and 1.8m (5.2 and 5.9 feet)
Must go all the way to the ground (to prevent our dog, including puppies, from escaping)

Thank you very much for your help

@apokolok, I know other opinions are not welcome, but I don’t want to quarrel with several neighbors over a fence, and that is very important to me.

That is perfectly fine. Everyone should be able to use their property as they see fit within the given circumstances. After all, you can also drive a Fiat Multipla and find it attractive.

I find the attitude of wanting to completely shield oneself from the surroundings quite odd. I enjoy chatting with neighbors, even over the plants. The children used to go back and forth, and you could pass a spade over the fence.

I lived in Germany for 47 years and have witnessed enough how neighbors behave just because they own property. Everyone watches everyone else closely; everything is examined and criticized. Neighbors complained because one neighbor left garden tools lying around for an extended period, the hedge or tree was too tall, something was sprayed, or a plant died. And so on and so forth.

Your garden is truly a dream.

One advantage of having uniform boundaries is that there are no neighborhood disputes about fences being too high or too close, etc.

Who owns the green strips in front of the houses?

Well, there are all kinds of people… but not everyone is like you describe.
And every region has its own styles and customs, just like every country or continent – just as you wouldn’t expect park trees to be planted in an old city center, it feels strange when someone wants to build a single-family house on a sufficiently sized lot and doesn’t really know or care about how to design the garden in a way that somewhat fits the surroundings (planting, fences, etc.). In suburbs of big cities, privacy screens may be justified, but somewhere along the line you also want to mentally integrate into the community when moving into a residential area. This requires a certain sensitivity and mutual consideration.
The same applies to building methods: in hot climates, people usually build covered patios into the house itself, while in rainy northern areas, everyone is grateful for any rays of sunshine they get.
Anyway! Let the original poster build their wall and set up their gravel garden – any trouble, whether from the authorities, neighbors, or even the child who already learns at daycare that radishes grow in the soil and bumblebees need protecting, will be theirs.
Every young person and builder has the right to continue developing. 😉

I find artificial privacy screens, especially the privacy slats, quite unattractive. But that’s a matter of personal taste. :-) If I were you, I would simply let various climbing plants grow on the wire mesh fence. It takes a few years, but it looks way better.
