Hello

We have purchased a semi-detached house.

After completion, we want to install a fence around our garden (we hope to have friendly neighbors who will share the costs).

We need about 55m (180 feet) of fencing.

We want the entire fence to have privacy screening and be between 1.6 and 1.8m (5.2 and 5.9 feet) high (this is legally allowed in our area).

Which type of fence would you recommend? We had thought about the standard welded wire mesh fence panels, but the privacy strips for these are quite expensive.

Is there a more affordable option, possibly with a different type of fence?

Requirements for the fence:

No maintenance (so no wood)
Privacy screening
Height between 1.6 and 1.8m (5.2 and 5.9 feet)
Must go all the way to the ground (to prevent our dog, including puppies, from escaping)

Thank you very much for your help

Which fence would you recommend to us? We were thinking of the standard double wire mesh fence. But the privacy slats for it are very expensive.

a) The slats are not expensive.
b) Does it have to be full privacy everywhere? At my last house, I also had slats on the patio area, but not up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) high and not near the ground (I’ve never seen anyone lie on the ground to look onto the property, at least). With full privacy, I would feel like I’m in a prison yard.
c) You can, for example, combine fence and hedge. The fence provides security, and the hedge offers privacy (and the hedge can be made up of various types of plants).

"The burgeoning passion of gardeners for privacy fences," a recent Spiegel article that fits well here. A 55m (180 feet) privacy fence would feel like a prison to me...

For us, a privacy fence means privacy (no, we don’t walk around the garden naked) 🙂

The privacy screen definitely needs to go all the way to the ground so our dog can’t see what’s happening in the neighbor’s garden, for example, when children are playing ball or if there’s another dog in their yard.

I wanted to first calculate the costs we will need for the entire fence with the privacy screen—cutting corners and having leftover money is always an option 🙂

The privacy strips for a 1.8 m (6 ft) high fence and 55 m (180 ft) length cost approximately 500 to 700 €—I had made a calculation error before 🙂 so the costs are really quite manageable.

Privacy through flowers is not an option since we are aiming for a minimalist garden with a few carefully placed flowers and mostly lawn area; we don’t want a flower wall.

The welded wire mesh fence with privacy strips is the best choice for us.

We want to first see what options we have in order to calculate the costs, and when we get to know our neighbors, we can propose this to them and hopefully share the costs.

Friends have stapled a tarp with a Caribbean vibe to the fence. It looks great. As soon as the terrace ends, Virginia creeper and wild grapevine climb along the fence. Occasionally, there is also a raspberry or blackberry. If you want, you can still sneak through, but that would almost be intentional.

Planning board nailed to the fence, giving a Caribbean vibe.

Looks great.

Good grief. How is that supposed to fit together at all?
