Good evening,
we are currently planning our house, and I am trying to gather as much information as possible. At the moment, I am focusing on the topic of security systems. We are planning without a smart home setup, so no window or door contacts are included. Our general contractor installs RC2N standard security on the ground floor. Now we are considering expanding this with video surveillance around the entire property. What are your experiences? Has anyone done something similar? Or would you recommend going for a traditional alarm system?
Thank you all in advance!

That’s exactly what I was getting at. I once attended a burglary prevention training conducted by the police. The main message was very clear: the only thing that really helps is to create as much effort as possible. Ok, thanks. So how do you achieve that? Does that mean RC3 is the only option?Hausbauer2021 schrieb:
Ok thanks, and how do you achieve this? So then RC3 is the only option? In this case, yes. We weighed the options. The extra cost for the windows would have been exorbitant. We wanted KNX from the start, so motion-activated exterior lighting was easily implemented. Cameras around the house weren’t “that” expensive either. We excluded an alarm system from the beginning. By the time the police arrive, the burglars have already cleared out the house anyway. And if not, the damage is done, and I think the worst feeling is knowing that strangers have rummaged through your belongings.
So we went with RC2N, plus lighting and cameras.
We asked around. Break-ins happen often in the area, but windows were never smashed. Many existing buildings had windows that were forced open. That doesn’t happen quickly with RC2N either.

The feeling of safety is always subjective. And taking security measures doesn’t necessarily improve that feeling. My advice:
Make it noisy and uncomfortable for burglars, act prudently, maintain good neighborhood relations, forget your worries, and live your life. You won’t find a safer place to live than in Central Europe.
Anyone breaking in here won’t find anything worth stealing, simply because it’s not there. Cash only in the form of loose coins, no valuable jewelry, no art that would interest collectors, no valuable electronics—and with so many windows, that can even be seen.
Video footage by itself does not really work as a deterrent or burglary prevention. With standard cameras, especially at night, you can only repeatedly see that someone was there. To capture usable details, you need much more advanced equipment. I also like having video, but it provides little practical benefit, other than possibly giving the police useful material for their investigation.
As others have mentioned: maximize the effort required for intruders, avoid dark corners or access points, keep everything as well-lit as possible, and possibly create noise as well. A prevention colleague once told me that the "N" in RC2N stands for "Nonsense." Just saying 🙂

A colleague from prevention once told me that the "N" in RC2N stands for "nonsense." In fact, a regular pane (in RC2N) still makes a lot of noise when broken, so I can easily believe it when I'm told that in nine out of ten cases the glass remains intact. Since this is the only significant reinforcement in the higher classes, you can really consider how useful it is for an average private house.
