Good evening,
we are currently planning our house, and I am trying to gather as much information as possible. At the moment, I am focusing on the topic of security systems. We are planning without a smart home setup, so no window or door contacts are included. Our general contractor installs RC2N standard security on the ground floor. Now we are considering expanding this with video surveillance around the entire property. What are your experiences? Has anyone done something similar? Or would you recommend going for a traditional alarm system?
Thank you all in advance!

Remote-triggered system? Otherwise, you need to be home, and then they probably won’t show up anyway. That’s a good point as well. For me, it’s important to be able to sleep relatively safely when I’m at home. If I’m away, they can break in — there’s nothing worth taking. The rest is covered by insurance.

What do you expect from surveillance?
We have one, as well as motion-activated outdoor lighting. But honestly, I don’t think it really helps. We hope for deterrence, but that will only work on inexperienced burglars. A seasoned burglar wears a balaclava and simply ignores it if they can get in quickly.
My sister-in-law once shared a video from friends. It shows how the burglar skillfully approaches the camera from an angle and throws a cloth over it.

That's why the combination of increased resistance and vigilance is important. It's not perfect, but if it takes too long and the offender risks being seen, they usually give up, mask or no mask. (Nowadays, everyone wears one anyway. 😀 ) That’s exactly what I wanted to point out.
I once attended a burglary prevention training conducted by the police. The main message was very clear: the only thing that truly helps is to create as much effort as possible.
