ᐅ Cabling for access points: choosing the correct network cable

Hello everyone,

Last week, I went through our terraced house with the electrician and shared all my requests, including where the access points should be installed in the future.

I was thinking of using Unify Nano devices, and it is important to me that the power is supplied via the network cable at the ceiling.

Now I am wondering if I should have a special cable installed, or if it doesn’t matter for the power supply as long as it is a network cable.

Thank you very much in advance.

And make sure that each conductor in the cable is made entirely of copper. There are also CCA (copper-clad aluminum) cables, which are cheaper, but the conductors are much more fragile. CCA is often found at large online retailers.

I’ll join the discussion here. We will probably get fiber optic internet for our construction project because the telecom company is not interested in operating in our small new development area, and the regional fiber optic provider is currently very active with installations here anyway.

Is there anything to consider regarding network installations inside the house? Specifically about cables or similar?

Rather unlikely. The fiber optic cable is usually installed only up to the connection room. You should then have all the cables installed inside the house gathered there. In most cases, your electrician will provide at least Cat 6 cables by default, so you should not experience any bottlenecks initially.

Additionally, "fiber optic" does not always mean "fast." Some acquaintances in a town near Luxembourg all have top-quality fiber optic connections, but the Luxembourg postal service only delivers about 25 Mbit there.

Yes, something like that does exist. But even if gigabit speeds are not achievable there today, the internal wiring should still be future-proof. 😉

However, that is only the case with at least Cat 7 cable, preferably Cat 7a or 8. Neither Cat 5(e) nor Cat 6 have met the current standard for what feels like 20 years now. 😉
