ᐅ Installing a laundry chute in the shower?

Hello everyone,
we are about to complete the bathroom on the top floor of our new build. The pipes have already been installed going upwards. We have a laundry chute in that room. We would also like to install a shower, which would need to be positioned in a way that the laundry chute is integrated into it. Do you have any ideas on how to make the chute waterproof? Is this even possible?

It’s convenient to have the washing machine on the same level where the laundry is generated.
With a shaft, you only save yourself from carrying laundry down. You still have to walk down and carry it back up…

I would never install it in the shower. It will never be permanently watertight. It also looks quite poor.

I would never want it like that, unless the room is heavily soundproofed and spacious. Normal houses (under 200m2 (2,150 sq ft)) usually don’t meet these conditions. A standard brick wall is not sufficient. The noise from the dryer and the spin cycle always annoy me. In the basement with a door closed, it’s mostly quiet in the ground floor.

If planned properly, this can be solved well.
I agree with you that a larger house makes it easier.
The space doesn’t have to be large. Properly size the ventilation system and, ideally, use a heat pump dryer.

Hello everyone!
Thank you very much for the numerous messages. I will send some pictures of the bathroom later. I would appreciate it if you could take another look then.

Regarding the laundry chute: for us, it is one of the best features you can plan for in a house. I would rather give up the upstairs bathroom than the chute. Of course, having both would be ideal!

Unfortunately, the chute’s location on the top floor was a "minor" planning mistake (although the only one). The contractors were faster back then, and we had no more influence over the chute’s position. It would be great if we can still come up with an elegant solution despite this planning error.

I’ll get back to you later! Thank you all.

In that case, it’s best to post the entire floor plan.

I wouldn’t do it. A shower stays damp for quite a while... before I step into the shower and worry about moisture on my clothes or socks, I’d rather take the laundry downstairs. A nice basket with a lid by the stairs does the job.

Who still goes down to the basement to do laundry these days??? This is a new build! It can be done much more comfortably.

Rarely have I read something so nonsense. You go to the basement to get potatoes or what

Hardly anyone, since very few people can still afford a basement 😉 :p
