ᐅ Rainwater Harvesting Cistern for Garden Irrigation – Which Pump Should I Use?

Greetings!

I am gradually starting to plan the garden irrigation for my soon-to-be-completed house. For now, I want to keep it simple and non-smart: a cistern (6,000 liters) is installed underground, and I plan to water the garden conventionally using a pump and garden hose. The farthest lawn area will be reachable with about 35 to 40 meters (115 to 130 feet) of hose length. The cistern is located at the lowest point, about 2.50 meters (8 feet) underground.

Now I am facing a confusing variety of possible pumps: suction pump, dirty water pump, submersible pump, garden pump, deep well pump... several thousand liters per hour, various pressure ratings in bar... Does anyone have good advice?

How do you seal the opening of a cistern through which I will run a 32mm (1.25 inch) PE pipe and an electrical cable? Are there any suitable lids for this? Also, would it make sense to install an additional KG pipe through which I would run the water pipe to allow easier replacement later on?

I need to ask another question: I would like to have a pressure switch in the pump. However, I also want to install a drain valve. Couldn't that create a vicious cycle where the pump keeps turning on every time it drains?! Or is a drain valve not necessary? Maybe someone can also answer my question from the previous post...
Thanks and regards

…You need drainage to protect the piping system from freezing. Simply equip the pump with a switch or just unplug it when you want to drain the water. 🙂 You will probably only drain the pipes and the control system once a year.

At what point does the valve open? It is, of course, only intended to empty the system for the winter.

For Gardena, it opens at 0.2 bar. The valve is located before the other valves. The pressure in the system stays stable and only drops to the pump’s activation pressure, which is usually around 1.3 bar.

… you can also do without a valve, open the pipe in the cistern, and drain the system using a foot pump or an air compressor. Just don’t forget to do it.
