Hello,

the carpenter working on our stairs is making a groove in the stringer at the back where we can run a cable. Every fourth stair tread, the stringer will have a hole drilled for a recessed LED spotlight. The plan is to have a cable come out of the wall behind the stringer and then be routed into the groove. That’s the theory so far.

A few questions:
- Is it allowed to run high-voltage wiring inside the groove of the stringer?
- When the carpenter drills the holes for the recessed spotlights, I assume this will be done on site, creating a hole in the stringer and then into the wall (since I have a prefabricated house). I could then install the lamp holders there. Is this allowed for high-voltage wiring?

Hello,

first of all, the house only has low voltage (230V/400V) installed 😉

Basically, you can run a 230V cable inside the stringer of your staircase and install 230V recessed lights there. You should make sure that heat is properly dissipated.

However, keep in mind that there are several options for LED recessed spotlights (with a central transformer, LEDs with 230V GU bases that can be screwed into conventional spot fittings, etc.).

First, you should be clear about what you want.

Hello,
Thank you for the response. Of course, I know what I want: 230 V with a GU9 socket, provided that, as I have outlined, it is legally and according to standards permitted. Ultimately, it has to be wired directly in the wall panel without an electrical box.

230 V should be done by your electrician, who also knows whether the design you have planned is safe. If you want to build it yourself, it’s better to use, for example, 24 V DC LEDs, especially due to liability and insurance considerations...

Yes, I can discuss that with the electrician. If it’s 24 V, then the power supply unit has to go somewhere... Are there any recommendations on how to handle this?
