In our floor plan, the pantry was criticized and considered unnecessary because we are building with a basement. In hindsight, it turned out to be a blessing that we included a pantry. The pantry always holds 3-4 cases of drinks, the freezer chest, the recycling bags for plastics (Yellow Sack), two Ikea Sortera bins for glass and paper, the robot vacuum, all canned goods, and some rarely used kitchen appliances.
Looking back, we wouldn’t build without a pantry and have really come to appreciate it.
The advantage of the pantry is that the kitchen stays tidier (with the Yellow Sack and bottles and paper waste in large bins outside the kitchen), and you don’t have to go down to the basement for every can or bottle.

the vacuum cleaning robot,... of course needs a cat flap in the pantry door when it is parked in the pantry 🙂https://www.instagram.com/11antgmxde/

We also debated the pantry a lot during planning. Since we are building with a basement, I considered the pantry unnecessary or even redundant. For the reasons you mentioned, we decided to keep it. My wife insisted.

However, if it reduces the usable area in the kitchen to something like a single-person apartment, then its purpose can be questioned. It really depends on your cooking habits. Some people need plenty of countertop space, while others prefer a kitchen that always looks as neat and tidy as a showroom.

wolverine19879 May 2021 19:38Hello!
I have another question for you.
How would you orient the interior of the house, since we are considering flipping the entire layout (west-east)?
We are wondering what would be better, having the living room in the east or in the west. The same applies, of course, to the kitchen and dining area.
Attached are both layout options along with the site plan of the house.
On the site plan, the house is still shown 3 meters (10 feet) too far east, but we have already adjusted it to 5 meters (16 feet). This leaves about 8 meters (26 feet) of space on the west side.
Maybe you have some ideas, opinions, or experiences on this topic. Thanks for your help so far!

Breakfast time is the morning sun for day shift workers, and for living rooms, the evening sun is usually more relevant. I’m surprised that the kitchen planning still hasn’t progressed – or does that only happen in a specialized forum where I don’t visit often enough?
