Hello everyone,

Is there a way to install a window high up on the wall (like a light strip) in a room or guest toilet that is adjacent to the garage? Since we are planning a basement, the house and therefore this room would be higher than the garage, so a narrow window should be possible, right? Placing windows on the top or bottom walls is not an option due to other adjoining rooms.

What am I overlooking, or why are all rooms adjacent to garages usually shown without windows in floor plans?

Has anyone done something similar before?

What does the basement have to do with it?

Because there simply isn’t a suitable place for a window. Where else could it go if the garage is 2.5 m (8 ft) high?

Because no window fits properly. Where else should it go when the garage is 2.5 meters (8 feet 2 inches) high?

Because the masonry raised basement projects 50-80 cm (20-31 inches) above ground level, this room is also 50-80 cm (20-31 inches) higher than the garage. That means the top edge of the garage is at 2.5 meters (8 feet 2 inches) and the room is at 2.5 meters (8 feet 2 inches) + X. The window would then be located at the height of this X.

Why don’t you mention that in your post then? My crystal ball didn’t say anything about a raised basement 😉

That means the garage’s top edge is at 2.50 meters (8.2 feet), and the room is at 2.50 meters plus X. And at this height X, there is a window.

How much of X remains for the window area after subtracting the frame? Is that even worth it? In principle, it’s doable, but it’s not the usual case.

How much of the window area remains after deducting the frame? Is it even worth it? Basically, it’s doable, but it’s not the usual case.

Sorry, I was mistaken in assuming that a basement always means a raised basement 🙂

This is the plan:

Floor plan of a house with entrance, stairs, windows, mezzanine, and rectangular garage on the right.

Whether it’s worth it: I think so, since that middle part of the house is intended for this room (more like a guest toilet). A narrow window should suffice there. The alternative would be to create an air gap between the house and garage to be able to install windows along the entire right side of the house. However, this gap is often discouraged here in the forum.

Windows flush with the top or bottom of the wall are not possible due to other adjacent rooms.
Please link the thread with your floor plan yourself; I am currently too busy. That way, it will be easier to give advice than with just a brief question snippet.
