ᐅ Shed Roof or Preferably Hip Roof for a Bungalow?

Hello,

This year, I plan to build a bungalow on my plot with my construction company. A shed roof is basically a flat roof but slightly angled to allow better water drainage. In the past, flat roofs often had problems with leaks after a few years.

How is the modern construction method for a shed roof compared to a hip roof? Is a hip roof always more reliable than a shed roof in terms of leak prevention after 20 or 30 years? Or have shed roofs become watertight enough nowadays that, if built properly, there are no longer any disadvantages compared to hip roofs?

Good luck

In practice, a shed roof house has become somewhat more expensive than a hip roof house.
Oh, is it already built? I thought you were asking about a house that hasn’t been built yet? 😳

That’s why I don’t want a flat roof, but a shed roof, so that water NEVER accumulates on the roof!
And why are you asking about a hip roof if the shed roof is already decided?

Because I was afraid it might eventually leak, I told the architect no flat roof, but a shed roof house.
You shouldn’t have imposed your fear on him but simply asked what he recommends to guarantee a watertight roof 😉

At least those still look like architecture. You can’t really say that about 90% of all hip roofs anymore 😎

But red is faster 😀

Shed roof. The ugliest of all roof types...

No, that title already goes to the (retiree) hip roof

Thanks, I'm not the only one!

And a shed roof has exactly zero difference from a hip roof at the same roof pitch. At least when it comes to the issue of waterproofing.

Well, in the two posted photos, the shed roof has a pitch of maybe ~8% and the hip roof about ~20% with roof tiles, which a shed roof does not have.
So your comparison is not quite accurate.

The house hasn’t been built yet (that’s why I’m asking) and no shed roof has been finalized either (apart from the fact that it subjectively looks more modern). According to the construction company, they build using the latest techniques and in all these years they have never had a leaking flat roof. But do you really trust every construction company when they tell you something?
