ᐅ Parquet irregularities – is this considered a defect?

Hello,

we purchased a condominium with 114 sqm (1,227 sq ft) and selected the flooring. There was an upcharge of 40€/sqm (4 USD/sq ft) net to upgrade from strip parquet to wide plank flooring. The floor is glued down, and we were genuinely excited, but now that it has been installed, we notice significant brightness variations. In the showroom, it appeared much more uniform. I have attached some photos here.

When we raised the issue of the inconsistency, we were told that they generally don’t mix planks but install them package by package in sequence as they come, and the floor will still be oiled. The company is actually quite reputable and correspondingly expensive, but I would have sorted the planks better myself.

Yep... we spent weeks going back and forth over whether to have a farmhouse-style staircase or not – in the end, we invested a four-figure amount in the beautiful stringer staircase. We instructed the moving company and all the tradespeople to be EXTREMELY careful with the stairs – and then my 1-year-old toddler throws his constantly drooling, “feed-me” dinosaur toy full force down the stairs over the baby gate. 🙄
The worst part is that the deepest dent is right in the angle of the daylight coming through the front door. You pretty much can’t NOT see it.

Within the family, this is easier to handle than involving a tradesperson:
Either you stick to feeding just the cheapest baby food from Aldi for the next few years, or you deduct the cost from their allowance during school years. That way, you replace the damage.
Be glad it wasn’t the tradesperson who caused it—then it would be nearly impossible to recover your money. With your own little rascal, it’s much easier; so consider yourself lucky!

Cool, only one dent? We already have three of those :-)
Well, we’ve been living here for over 5 years.
One is about 2cm (0.8 inches) long, semicircular, like the bottom of a glass bottle including the grooves.
Since our wood is beech, I assume it could be repaired somehow by making the wood swell and then sanding it down.

I have to say I like it. It has a certain charm, and I like the texture of the wood. If a friend looks at it right now and you don’t prompt him, he will say "cool."

The photos already show a quite strong contrast. I wouldn’t be completely satisfied with it either. It probably won’t be enough to make a complaint—especially since you got a fairly inexpensive parquet floor. Overall, I think the flooring turned out well.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t cheap; the parquet normally costs over €100 per square meter (about $100 per square yard). But thank you, we put a lot of pressure on them—perhaps too much—as even outsiders noticed it. Otherwise, the floor is a dream: rustic with knotty wood and quite varied. I think we might have let ourselves be influenced a bit by others.
The latest update is that the boards can be cut out and replaced, but whether that will actually look good, we prefer to leave it as is. The manager wants to take another look at everything after it’s been oiled.

Stay calm! I experienced the same thing. And it really does get more beautiful over time. It will be your floor, and you’ll definitely get used to it! This is not a real defect since the darker beams are normal for wood.

I also chose parquet with knots. The sample in the store had a few well-distributed, nice knots. At home, my floor has lots of knots, much more than the sample. The sample always shows only the best section. You probably wouldn’t have chosen the floor if the sample showed the transition from light to dark.

I think it looks nice as it is for you. 🙂 However, I am also a big fan of wooden floors and generally find them beautiful.
