Hello everyone!

As you can see, we are new here and quite impressed with the community!

My wife and I are planning to start our house building project soon. Our first challenge is finding a plot of land. To possibly allocate more budget for the house itself, we would like to use a plot that we already own. The plot is located in Oyten near Bremen. The problem is that the town of Oyten does not want to approve the land for building because they want to prevent urban sprawl in Oyten. On the other hand, they complain about not attracting young new residents to the town.

Now my idea: Do you think it makes sense to contact the town and say, “Take our plot and give us one where we are allowed to build”?

How would you approach this situation?

Thank you very much and best regards, André & Anika

What do you have to lose? You don’t have permission anyway 😉

Well, that probably won’t be that easy. Building land is in demand, but garden or farmland usually not so much.

I would first try to find out if the head of the building department is a friendly person or rather difficult. If it’s the former, I would ask for an appointment and inquire where building land is still available, what land is planned to become building land in the future, or whether there might still be a chance for the existing plot.

Otherwise, the only option is to buy and sell on the open market. Nobody will likely trade, unless there’s some gold or oil hidden in the garden somewhere. 😉
