Good evening everyone,

We are currently planning the exterior design of our house and would appreciate advice from those with building experience 🙂

How did you approach the color scheme for the outside? For example, the roof tile color, window frames, front door, garage door, and so on?

There is always the option to choose RAL colors... Has anyone done this, or how did you coordinate your colors?

(PS: Our house will be white, and the tiles/windows/front door, etc., will be in a dark gray/light black tone...)

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Kind regards
I

Oh dear, that sounds a bit risky.

In our contract with the general contractor, we agreed that we could request plaster samples. These were then sent to us directly by the paint manufacturer. Therefore, I assume that other paint manufacturers might handle it the same way. I would recommend looking into this.

When in doubt, it’s better to spend a few extra euros on a larger test panel than to end up with an unwanted facade color.

I didn’t dare to suggest that—but that’s exactly how I would do it every time. We applied the three preferred plasters onto drywall panels and then placed them around the house—on all sides!—to observe how the color and texture look under different lighting conditions—but we tend to be a bit picky. 🙂

Completely understandable.
I wouldn’t call that picky either.
Considering the price for a complete exterior plastering, the risk of being dissatisfied with the result—especially compared to the cost of avoiding such issues—would be too significant for me.

Maybe I’m not the right reference point, as I’m also having a reinforcing skim coat with fiberglass mesh installed across the entire surface to prevent cracking.

One of the plastered areas looked wet and mossy green on the north side, as if it had been sprayed with water. When dry, it appeared as a cool, very bright, almost white sandy tone. We were like: 😱 – after that, nobody laughed at me for the extra effort anymore.

I also believe this should not be approached carelessly. It should be noted that exterior plaster on a house usually appears more intense in color than it does on a color chart or a small sample. Therefore, it is still possible to choose a bold color, but this should be kept in mind.

Maybe you can also spot your preferred color somewhere and directly ask the painter or even the homeowner about it.

The attentive reader will know that I am also in a similar situation, but under slightly different circumstances. It is somewhat unfortunate that the majority opts for the ‘trash bin’ gray – anthracite – with white/light accents. However, that would (unfortunately) likely be our direction as well, although I would lean more towards RAL 9006 or RAL 9007. Color accents (front door) in a dark red.
