We have a KfW-55 end-terrace house with insulation, triple glazing, and a ventilation system. Now we want to install a cat flap in a glass panel next to the patio door. Has anyone done this before?

- How does this affect the performance of the ventilation system? It won’t be completely airtight anymore.
- How much heat loss can we expect – it’s just a simple plastic flap, after all.
- Is installation even possible with triple glazing that also has RC2 security features?

We would have a professional company do the installation, but we’re not sure if it’s all feasible. I would appreciate hearing about others’ experiences.

A professional company will replace the entire glass unit for you – there is no other way. Another option is to drill a core hole through the wall or, for example, through a door. With triple glazing, this can be quite an expensive undertaking.

With money, anything is possible. But then only a new, fully custom-made side panel/glass element at the price of 357 cats ;-)

I’d rather recommend something like this:

Green wall unit with open cat portal; A cat is looking inside.

I know the PetWalk. It’s not an option—not because of the price, but because of how it works. It’s a real door that stays open far too long each time. During that time, three stray cats run in and out. Also, our tomcat would constantly be sitting in front of the open door, which remains open as long as the chip is detected. So, nothing is gained from that.

I prefer manual opening. It prevents unwanted surprises. Birds, snakes, and mice always get inside, and cats can also manage to get through together – with a chip.

That was just an example.

A simple cat flap is even worse. Always open—anyone or anything can come in or go out. It’s drafty and not sealed well. There must be alternatives to the PetWalk, but anything would be better than a simple cat flap in the house.
