Good evening,
I would like to get some surveillance cameras. Unfortunately, there are so many offers available, with some costing 1500 euros and others 300 euros, even though I hardly see any difference between some of them. Therefore, I wanted to ask if anyone has a lot of knowledge or experience with a good set.
I would like to have 4 cameras for outdoor use. They should have Wi-Fi, as I don’t want to run cables everywhere, and offer live streaming to a smartphone via an app or another method. Additionally, an optional alarm that can be activated—preferably only at night—would be useful.
The problem is that I don’t want the cameras to be immediately noticeable on my house, so ideally they should have a black housing. I plan to hang them on my balcony and point them toward my house. The sidewalk will also be recorded since my property extends to the street, so there should be no legal issues.
I’m willing to spend up to 500 euros if that is feasible. I hope someone can help me as soon as possible because frequently teenagers cause trouble right in front of my house. For example, every year on New Year’s Eve, someone throws a firework into a stone trash bin that is located in front of my house. EVERY YEAR THE SAME THING. Now I’ve had enough and plan to go to the police this year with hopefully good video evidence.
Thank you very much for the help.

Traumfaenger23 Feb 2021 21:14I have had excellent experiences with PoE. I installed a Dahua dome camera in my porch roof, which is connected to the monitors of the door station but can also be viewed via PC, smartphone, etc. I am very satisfied with it. Previously, I used an UpCam, which was okay. In between, I tried several other cameras and later installed an INSTAR 9020 Full HD in the garden. That one was an absolute disappointment for me in every way, but I missed the return deadline by one day and had to keep it, and since then I have been annoyed by it repeatedly. I bought it based on good reviews online, but I can't understand where those come from. In any case, regardless of the camera model, PoE is a very reliable and stable solution for me.
Thanks for the feedback!
I actually wanted to place them in the corners of the house to cover areas that can no longer be seen from the street. More for “deterrence” than for detecting DHL deliveries or neighbor’s cats. We will have a light well, where I can imagine that someone could gain rather undisturbed access to the house.

What do you want to do with cameras on the eaves? To see where the robot mower is or how much hair your guests have?
That’s a very bad location. But okay as a gimmick.

More for "deterrence,"...and who should that deter? A similar effect, or maybe not, is probably achieved by a sign showing a large dog with a very fierce look. Polemisch schrieb:

I hope someone can help me as soon as possible – the reason is that teenagers often cause trouble right in front of my house, and for example, every New Year’s Eve one of them comes by at night and throws a firecracker into a stone trash bin that stands in front of my house. THE SAME THING EVERY YEAR. Now I’ve had enough and this year I plan to go to the police with hopefully good video evidence. And what result do you expect from a night recording? I’d save the $500 and buy myself a nice grill for friendly get-togethers, since in that price range you only get toys anyway. Sure, an isolated case like that is annoying, but no security system will really solve it. And as you describe your plan here, it probably won’t happen. HilfeHilfe schrieb:
Just sit behind the bushes armed with your smartphone Then make sure to bring a stool and some snacks. This isn’t a crime drama or old TV show where crooks come predictably on time. And what are you supposed to capture on your smartphone… in the dark… the firecracker won’t be held in hand for long 😀 I really can’t get on board with this almost hysterical obsession with cameras because from my own experience, the vast majority of them provide zero benefit except giving the sellers a nice profit margin.
Yes, there are exceptions and some occasional useful applications, but this watering-can approach of mostly fear-driven use doesn’t bring the peace we want in life. Children immediately pick up on their parents’ fear, which negatively shapes their development. They start to believe (because Mom and Dad say it), that outside is dangerous.
Having lived in a country with very fearful citizens, I see what will come to us or is already here.
Cameras, sirens, and alarms everywhere and all the time, even though the number of incidents does not justify it. That’s no fun AND as one can see in adults but especially many children with concern, it changes their nature. They keep looking up at the camera from time to time or avoid it. They know a camera is running and no longer behave naturally. Similar to how children today who are photographed hundreds of times daily lose some of their naturalness.

I can’t see any value in this almost hysterical dashcam craze by now I can! Today, I watched a dashcam video where someone threw an egg against the windshield. The video lasted about 30 seconds and showed the egg white and yolk slowly running down the glass... 😀Cameras do make sense, but only when they are part of an overall concept. Often, they are installed just to have some kind of "overview." As I have mentioned in several similar threads, there are more effective deterrents and protective measures. At 500€ per camera, you are no longer dealing with entry-level equipment.
We have over 30 cameras. The cheapest is in that price range. The most expensive is five figures. However, everything is integrated into a comprehensive system. I have it because I am tech-savvy, not because it is "necessary."
