Good evening 🙂

I’m looking for some creative ideas regarding a loft conversion – the plan is to create two apartments in the attic. Unfortunately, when renovating the first floor, the staircase to the attic was not included. The two apartments on the first floor should remain exactly as they are.

The house has a north-south orientation, so the owner wants both apartments to have north and south-facing windows. I would have divided the attic lengthwise and added an external staircase on the free gable end. I have attached what I have drawn so far – the hand sketch shows my idea of how the layout could be arranged. Both chimneys are to be used within the two apartments. The water connection is already prepared – marked as H2O in my drawing.

I would really appreciate it if someone had a creative solution, so the project doesn’t fail before it even starts due to the staircase issue.

Thank you very much in advance and looking forward to your ideas,
Silke

Who exactly are you in this whole situation?

What does the heritage preservation officer say about your idea?

Simply connecting additional heating appliances is not something you can decide on a whim.

I work on the farm and would like to move into one of the two new staff apartments.

Thanks for the reminder – I hadn’t checked that aspect beforehand. According to the classification, the building complex is "of historical and economic significance." Some changes have already been made in advance, including access and emergency stairs for the attic conversion in the former stable, which is only one story.

Just casually connecting additional heating systems isn’t something that can be done freely.
I’m aware of that – during the roof renovation, I believe a future use of the attic as living space was considered. One of the chimneys was replaced, but the access to the roof wasn’t addressed. The 0.5 by 0.75 meter (1.6 by 2.5 feet) hatch isn’t really practical even for temporary accommodation, especially since the stair ends at the floor level and the 50 cm (20 inches) ceiling height has to be overcome somehow – I regularly get frustrated when going down.
