ᐅ Central computer system with terminals in the rooms

Hello everyone 🙂

I am new to the forum and I hope this is the right place to ask.

I am currently planning a new build. I have now reached the point where I am thinking about the locations for my computers. I work with computers a lot, both privately and professionally.

I am planning an office where I will often work from home. Ideally, I wouldn’t have my computers right next to me, but rather in a separate room. It would also be great if not every child needed their own PC, but this could be managed centrally as well.

I have thought of two options:

1. PCs located in a central room, with signals distributed to other rooms via HDMI or USB cables inside the walls. I’m not sure if this is even possible?

2. PCs in a central room and terminals in the individual rooms. Here I wonder which terminals would be suitable (up to 4 monitors) and whether special software is needed. I am familiar with Citrix professionally, but I don’t know how expensive it could be for private users.

What options do I have or do you use?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Regards,
Chris

No, you want 3-4 monitors in 4K. No thin client can handle that!
I would simply use the Dell Wyse 5070 in the maximum configuration – supporting 4x4K + 2xHD. Whether that makes sense and how well it works, I can't say. However, Dell advertises support for up to 6 monitors.

Thank you for the correction @nordanney
We have not been working with thin clients for years. Our customers need "all" fat clients anyway. And on top of that, my brain is still running version 2.0b, I wasn’t up to date 😉 Nevertheless, he forgot to include the necessary server in his calculation.

??? All of this is possible???

Just as an example: We have a very tech-savvy colleague here who set up a FluSi (MS Flight Simulator) in his basement with several FHD projectors and multiple high-performance PCs. The total costs are currently around 35-40K (35,000–40,000) but increase over time.

Are you willing to spend that amount or more? If yes, fine. I can offer you (just a little) online consultation. If not, this topic is basically over here (it actually could have been closed right after the original post).

The hardware always follows the demand. This means you need to describe your requirements in detail! (For example, I ask for the exact software including version.) Then a tailor-made hardware and software solution will be developed.
Customers who come with requests like yours get dismissed immediately! Because that wastes the time of those involved.
Then just kick me out, the way new members are treated here makes it no fun anyway.

Oh @Chris90, then tell us more about your requirements. That way we can help and have some fun.

If you only say you want more processing power than a laptop, the usual answer is a regular desktop PC. And if it should be silent, then water cooling is the way to go. Even the most expensive (highest performance) CPU can run perfectly silently while gaming. I've experienced this myself with family during midsummer. Just add a few more radiators and you're set. The water cooling system will then cost about 1000€ (around $1100). This meets all requirements: powerful, silent, four monitors. Super easy. And the room stays nice and warm even without heating. 😉

How old are your kids, by the way? They would probably prefer a gaming PC with colorful LEDs or buy one themselves instead of using dad’s DIY setup. Or maybe they don’t want a PC at all, and a silent all-in-one PC or tablet would be enough.

If your opinion is fixed, then look for KVM over IP or similar keywords. But those are all troublesome solutions, or they get expensive. Very expensive if you want more than Full HD at 30Hz. And you probably do want that—you describe yourself as tech-savvy. By the way, DisplayPort 2 transmits up to 77.37 Gbit/s. Good luck trying to stream that 4 times over a network 😉

That leaves only breaking through the wall, so the computer/server sits directly behind the wall 🤨

There is a good reason why the combination of mainframe and terminal eventually disappeared. With multiple computers, you are simply more flexible, and each computer can be optimized for its specific task. You want a jack-of-all-trades, but that doesn’t exist. Instead, put a computer in each room optimized for what it needs to do, and set up a file server in the utility room. There are also "home clouds" available—just take a look.
