Hello everyone 🙂
I am new to the forum and I hope this is the right place to ask.
I am currently planning a new build. I have now reached the point where I am thinking about the locations for my computers. I work with computers a lot, both privately and professionally.
I am planning an office where I will often work from home. Ideally, I wouldn’t have my computers right next to me, but rather in a separate room. It would also be great if not every child needed their own PC, but this could be managed centrally as well.
I have thought of two options:
1. PCs located in a central room, with signals distributed to other rooms via HDMI or USB cables inside the walls. I’m not sure if this is even possible?
2. PCs in a central room and terminals in the individual rooms. Here I wonder which terminals would be suitable (up to 4 monitors) and whether special software is needed. I am familiar with Citrix professionally, but I don’t know how expensive it could be for private users.
What options do I have or do you use?
Thanks in advance for your advice!
Regards,
Chris

Sorry, but I thought this forum was for constructive discussions and that someone could also bring a different idea.
Just because someone wants to solve something differently doesn’t mean it’s all pointless... If that’s what you’re looking for, this is the wrong forum (although it has improved quite a bit lately). This forum mainly focuses on home construction itself, financing, floor plans, and so on. Topics like having a network in every room are regularly rejected by many. I would actually like to see more technical topics discussed here, but let’s be honest: in about three-quarters of building projects, what gets installed is basically whatever the architect or general contractor includes as their standard for electrical work, networking, and other building services.
As I said, you’ve received a few suggestions. Make use of them.

As I said, you’ve already received a few suggestions. Make use of them. The main reason is probably that the use case of the original poster is relevant to about 99.99999% of homeowners or simply doesn’t interest them. What they plan is very specific (and in my opinion completely pointless, even if it’s a hobby). But I know not everything needs to be meaningful...

Thank you very much for the great answers!
I see it exactly the same way 😀
So my requirement is that everything should work. Even graphically demanding tasks. Not gaming, but since that’s essentially the same, I say gaming should also be possible in this case. 🙂 ??? Everything works???
Just as an example: we have a very tech-savvy colleague who set up a flight simulator (MS Flight Simulator) in his basement with several full HD projectors and multiple high-performance PCs. The total cost is currently around 35,000-40,000 euros (will increase over time).
Are you willing to spend that amount or more? If yes, okay. I can provide you (a very little) online advice on this. If not, the topic is basically closed here (it could have been closed right after the original post).
Hardware always follows the need. That means you describe your needs in detail! (For example, I ask for the exact software including version numbers!) Then a custom hardware and software solution will be designed accordingly.
Customers who come with demands like yours get dismissed immediately! Because that is a waste of time for those involved.

If it’s just about the noise: A water cooling system doesn’t cost 500 EUR and serves the same purpose with greater stability. I would go for liquid nitrogen... if you’re going all out... 🙂
Otherwise, the waste heat from the server room could potentially be used to heat the house (?)!

Yes, I will take a look at it later.
I thought there might be people here who already have such a solution and could give recommendations.
Apparently, I’m the only one here with this idea.
I don’t understand why almost everyone finds it unreasonable to put all PCs in one room to avoid noise and have everything neatly centralized... We (the company) build solutions like this. These are partly “standard” terminal server setups for office work.
But for high graphics performance (CAD) over terminal services, Microsoft has unfortunately been constantly changing the framework conditions in recent years. If you choose a solution that currently works well, it might no longer run smoothly after the next server update. The graphics accelerator for the terminal server alone costs from $2,000 upwards.
The terminal server requires a bit more for operation. Our standard configuration:
One physical server with 2x 8-16 core CPUs (we prefer HPE DL380 Gen10), running 2-3 virtual machines (VMs). On the physical server, the hypervisor is either Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware. On top of that are the VMs: 1x domain controller, 1x terminal server, often also separate SQL and/or file servers.
Depending on performance, this costs between $15,000 and $25,000 including installation (I checked our last orders). It is also highly scalable, so adding a few more users isn’t a problem. But regardless of whether you only need it for 3 users, the initial effort is always there.
