Hello everyone 🙂
I am new to the forum and I hope this is the right place to ask.
I am currently planning a new build. I have now reached the point where I am thinking about the locations for my computers. I work with computers a lot, both privately and professionally.
I am planning an office where I will often work from home. Ideally, I wouldn’t have my computers right next to me, but rather in a separate room. It would also be great if not every child needed their own PC, but this could be managed centrally as well.
I have thought of two options:
1. PCs located in a central room, with signals distributed to other rooms via HDMI or USB cables inside the walls. I’m not sure if this is even possible?
2. PCs in a central room and terminals in the individual rooms. Here I wonder which terminals would be suitable (up to 4 monitors) and whether special software is needed. I am familiar with Citrix professionally, but I don’t know how expensive it could be for private users.
What options do I have or do you use?
Thanks in advance for your advice!
Regards,
Chris

HilfeHilfe8 Jan 2021 08:04So you want to set up a workspace and a private school for the kids in the house? ^^
Isn't that a bit oversized? We have 125 sqm (1345 sq ft). One TV, two laptops (HP for work & Mac for personal use), two iPads, and four smartphones are constantly connected to the Wi-Fi.
That works without any problems. Installing any cables is just unnecessary. Setting up server rooms makes no sense either when everything is moving toward mobile devices anyway.
At work, I had three monitors; now just one laptop! Everything works fine, and I don’t miss anything.

The children will definitely want to play, so a terminal is not useful anyway.
On the other hand, whether you put a terminal or a PC in the room doesn’t matter to me.
HDMI and USB in the wall don’t work well anyway.

There are several options.
You could use virtual machines and access them via a client. However, you still need a client PC.
Alternatively, you could use KVM switches. These can now also be operated over IP, meaning you only have HDMI, USB, etc., locally.
However, I don’t consider any of these solutions very efficient. For a small amount of money, you can get silent mini-PCs. Some can even be hidden behind the monitor. If you need a powerful computer, place it in a rack and access it remotely. Alternatively, use a virtual machine on a server.

You don’t need to question the purpose of this. 😀 I’m just tech-savvy and will never manage with only a laptop. For my work, I need as many large screens as possible 😉
I’m planning to have 4 PCs and 4 TVs, and I’d like to set up everything as centrally as possible, with only screens and input devices placed where needed. 😉
Okay, I figured it would come down to terminals or NUCs. This way, the rooms are quiet, which is very important to me.
Which ones are suitable if I want to use 4 screens? Do I need special software for this, or is Windows Remote sufficient? (It should be possible to have different screens with varying resolutions.)
