ᐅ Gray/Anthracite-Colored Windows – The New "White"?

Hello everyone,

We recently visited the construction site of our general contractor. The house had gray windows on the outside, and my husband was immediately impressed.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we had to wait a bit before entering the house, and that’s when I noticed that the window handles were white. Then I looked at the windows from the inside – also white. I didn’t like that. For me, both the outside and inside being gray would not be an option.

It seems like almost every new build has gray windows these days. Is gray the new white now, or just a trend, and will the classic white windows make a comeback?

I like white, my husband prefers gray...

What did you decide on?

In my opinion, white window frames on the outside look somewhat "cheap" – but of course, that’s a matter of personal taste.

Everyone has their own perception. We looked at different color combinations for the windows, but ultimately we weren’t sure about any except white, which was the only one we agreed on.

Personally, for example, I didn’t like how the gray window frames looked from the outside, especially when you got closer and saw the white window handle that protruded from the inside.

But as you already said, it’s all a matter of taste!

The advantage of white on the outside is clear: you avoid the extra $4,000 cost for aluminum cladding—or the smaller premium for colored film—and you won’t have problems with the film later on. I don’t even want to imagine how all the windows will look in 10–15 years, so I’d definitely prefer white if it suits your taste.

Regarding costs: My 8 windows (including 2 units each 2.5m (8.2 ft) wide facing south) cost just over 10,000 (including VAT) installed. These are Internorm windows with concealed fittings and aluminum cladding, about half of them with RC2 security rating. I found the price very reasonable. Only the installation could definitely have been better. They will need to make improvements there (sealing tape, etc.)

Are those the "KF410" from Internorm? We also have Internorm windows, but one model lower in price (KF310) without concealed fittings. The version with concealed fittings would have cost an additional €2,500. We are actually considering installing those windows as well and will probably get the KF410 at a very good price through our window contractor’s Christmas promotion and a good connection—possibly even with no extra charge thanks to the offer.

I was very impressed with the windows—simply excellent quality. Especially the aluminum cladding... When I saw that, I immediately thought: never ever film!

The acrylic-colored windows were offered to us only for the KfW55 standard. Unfortunately, the better insulating windows required for KfW40 are not available in solid-colored acrylic from Kn33r Südf. External film application costs us about €3500 (approximately $3750). I would estimate, though I never asked, that applying film on the inside would cost about the same as on the outside, since the work involved is similar. We wanted white anyway, and the additional cost only reinforces this choice.

Exactly... We also looked at the windows with a fourth pane and integrated blinds/shutters and found the system very "charming" since it would have completely eliminated the usual back-and-forth between the different trades involved in house construction (façade), the shutter supplier (box / installation / control, etc.), and the window manufacturer. Small drawbacks (including the prohibitively high price, which definitely doesn’t reflect the actual production cost) led us to stick with the traditional combination.
