ᐅ Gray/Anthracite-Colored Windows – The New "White"?

Hello everyone,

We recently visited the construction site of our general contractor. The house had gray windows on the outside, and my husband was immediately impressed.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we had to wait a bit before entering the house, and that’s when I noticed that the window handles were white. Then I looked at the windows from the inside – also white. I didn’t like that. For me, both the outside and inside being gray would not be an option.

It seems like almost every new build has gray windows these days. Is gray the new white now, or just a trend, and will the classic white windows make a comeback?

I like white, my husband prefers gray...

What did you decide on?

That was also our initial idea: white walls, white windows.
However, we had seen black windows with white walls somewhere, and we liked that.
In addition, the exterior venetian blinds are also going to be anthracite, and you can see those from the inside as well.
I think we prefer the all-anthracite look the most.

That was also our first consideration—white walls, white windows.

No, thank you. First, you don’t want to get overwhelmed by looking at too much white (which almost forces you to use colorful accents), and second, when surrounded by intense bright white, you notice both the variety of white shades (which can sometimes clash with each other) and every tiny imperfection or off-white as distracting. I always say symmetry is a substitute aesthetic for those who struggle with proportions – in my opinion, the same applies to an overdose of white as a false sense of purity.

The windows (anthracite on the outside, white on the inside) are supposed to cost an additional 3200 €.
We haven't requested a quote yet for anthracite on both sides; let's see how much more that will cost.

We had a similar surcharge as you for white inside/gray outside. For both sides colored, it was something like a 5500 € surcharge.

We decided against colored and chose white instead 🙂

Here are at least the windows in color. The plaster will probably be applied next year.

We decided against colored and went with white 🙂

For us, the surcharge for both sides was around 6,500 Euros. For the exterior in anthracite or gray—some shade between RAL 7012 and 7106 (but not foil-wrapped, rather with aluminum cladding)—we paid an additional 3,800.00 Euros. The interior would have been foil-wrapped, which is not a problem. I just don’t want any color-wrapped windows on the outside 🙂

In my opinion, white windows on the exterior look somewhat “cheap”—but of course, that’s a matter of taste. We are going for a darker gray, but not straight anthracite. We found a great window manufacturer with really nice colored aluminum cladding.

Colored interiors are tricky... You always have to think: maybe you have a colored wall, then a wooden floor, additional colorful accessories, possibly a white or colored inner window sill, and then the window frame really stands out. It might end up looking a bit like a colorful playhouse. I would definitely be careful—it can definitely work, but it doesn’t have to 😀

Somehow, we’re now leaning towards anthracite both inside and outside.

That’s quite a strong contrast with the usually white walls. I think it looks awful 😉

No, it can look very elegant. I had black wooden windows with muntins in my townhouse. It had something special, not worse... actually better... even though I’m not usually a fan of black-and-white combinations 🙂
