Hello everyone,
Since we were originally set on installing a satellite dish in our new single-family home, we are now considering watching TV via IPTV (online TV) instead.
I’m curious to know what is commonly installed in new homes nowadays, or more specifically, what kind of connection people use to watch TV these days?
Does IPTV even make sense? I have heard from several sources that the price-performance ratio is very good. For example, subscribing to a service like Waipu for around 6€ (about $6.50) and watching online TV.
The installation of our satellite system plus materials would cost us 840.00€ (about $900). Over roughly 10–15 years, such a satellite system would likely pay for itself, but I wonder if the future lies with online TV? Cable, of course, has high monthly fees (which a satellite dish does not), so that option is basically ruled out for us at the moment.
However, I’m still a bit unclear about the terms “IPTV” and “online TV.” Do I necessarily need an IPTV set-top box, or can I just subscribe to one of the numerous online providers and watch TV through an app?
We have very good fiber-optic broadband in our new development, so the DSL connection should not be an issue.
Has anyone already dealt with this topic in their new build and can share experiences or tips? 🙂

For example, we have a cable connection. There is also coaxial wiring throughout the house that is currently not in use.
We only use the connection for internet, so it’s quite affordable. For us, it’s the only option for fast internet. (We also have a Telekom connection installed and a conduit for fiber optic.)
TVs run via Zattoo. This works either directly through the smart TV or, in our case, via Apple TVs.
Zattoo is cheaper than cable TV, and the channels are in HD. Additionally, it works across Europe on mobile devices.
An additional receiver is only needed for Magenta TV and similar services.
With Zattoo, the most expensive subscription (cancelable monthly) costs 13.99€ and allows streaming on four devices simultaneously.
What kind of internet connection do you have? With slow download speeds, problems can occur if multiple people are streaming. Cable usually offers higher download speeds.
Make sure to install enough wall outlets.
There is already a long thread about satellite, IPTV, and related topics in this forum.

There is already a long thread here in the forum about satellite, IPTV... How does Zattoo work then? TV on – open the app on the smart TV – and go? I could imagine that the “start-up” might be a bit annoying, but I might be wrong since I have zero experience with it. I did some research on the subscriptions and I actually think the pricing is quite reasonable.
The internet connection should be very good according to the new broadband expansion and fiber optic in the new development area. Apparently up to 1,000 megabits 😀
It all depends on your TV habits. I know several people who haven’t watched any linear TV for a long time, and that number keeps growing. Two to three years ago, I would have recommended satellite, but currently, it’s on the list to be dropped. Adequate network cabling is more important to me today than satellite.

About 2-3 years ago, I would have said satellite, but currently it’s on the chopping block. For me, sufficient network cabling is more important than satellite nowadays. I keep reading this as well – but I don’t understand why it depends on TV habits?
We definitely still watch linear TV, so streaming via Netflix and similar services is not an option for us yet. However, I can watch linear TV just as well through internet TV. So basically, I don’t see any disadvantage compared to satellite, do I?
