ᐅ Space under the stairs not suitable for construction

Hello everyone!

We are currently in talks with two different construction companies. Both know about our wish to use the space under the stairs as a small storage room by installing a drywall partition and a door. One company says: absolutely, we can do that! The other says it’s not possible because the drywall partitions would warp significantly since the wooden stairs will continue to settle and move for a long time. With the company that agrees, we have planned a staircase with a landing, while the company that disagrees proposes a straight staircase (just in case that matters).

I have often seen such spaces and was surprised to hear that it might not be possible.

What do you think?

If drywall is absolutely necessary – another material might actually be more suitable, and Company 2 has a good idea in store.

Hmm, we only needed a lower wall... we also included the upper half with risers, and below that is the wardrobe. The rest is built with masonry.
We are very satisfied! It makes it practical!
For example, we can see on the stairs when the light underneath is on, and so on.
Many very particular sticklers would probably consider this insufficient or inadequate. No idea. It is also a special request for the general contractor, carried out by the drywall installer. Otherwise, no one else worked on it. We could probably improve the appearance, but for us it’s fine.
If you’re interested, I can take photos.

When reading some threads where homeowners try to find defects to withhold money, I can understand why a contractor might not agree to such a pragmatic and effective solution.

You’re very welcome to take a photo. 🙂
Here is what we are planning:

Interior: White staircase with dark treads and railings, fireplace room in the background.

I wouldn’t count ourselves among those kinds of homeowners 😉

Well, you just need to install the panels on the inside and seal the stringers of the staircase from below, as well as the upper part, with acrylic. ...
