We are currently looking for a kitchen for our new build, which is scheduled to start in 2021. Nothing extravagant. Our first two visits to kitchen showrooms resulted in prices of at least 15,000 euros (around $16,000 USD), plus the side-by-side refrigerator that we plan to buy ourselves.
We are a bit surprised that for just a few pieces of furniture and three appliances (dishwasher, cooktop with fan, oven) we have to pay at least 15,000 euros. The consultants actually expected around 20,000 euros. The countertop is not even ceramic but rather granite.
Are there other options to purchase an affordable kitchen?
Please don’t get me wrong. We could afford such a kitchen. We just don’t see why we should spend 20,000 euros on a few furniture pieces and appliances.

He probably just went to the kitchen showroom, gave his budget, showed the plan with the G-shape, and said, “That’s what I want.” His practical kitchen experience so far came from his parents and a few rental apartments.
Even though it is often “preached,” the main idea is usually to show the original poster more practical options. This includes, for example, a better extractor hood, a 6-level cabinet height system if you have a certain body height, and the fact that not every kitchen layout remains enjoyable over the years—especially when there are five people using it. But nobody tells you this at the showroom, where the kitchen planner is under time and sales pressure, especially in the “more affordable” price segment. A kitchen is used as much as the bed. I do think it’s worth spending a bit more on the kitchen furniture to get more and better storage, more workspace, and low-maintenance fronts. When it comes to appliances, this is less important since the kitchen will remain even if the appliances are replaced several times.
But for most people, it has to be an island kitchen, a Dekton countertop (which breaks faster than others), handleless profiles because everyone else has them even though they cost more and offer less storage. Everyone does the same thing—herd behavior—nobody dares to do something different. If everyone does it, it must be right.
