ᐅ Excessive Costs for the Kitchen?!

We are currently looking for a kitchen for our new build, which is scheduled to start in 2021. Nothing extravagant. Our first two visits to kitchen showrooms resulted in prices of at least 15,000 euros (around $16,000 USD), plus the side-by-side refrigerator that we plan to buy ourselves.

We are a bit surprised that for just a few pieces of furniture and three appliances (dishwasher, cooktop with fan, oven) we have to pay at least 15,000 euros. The consultants actually expected around 20,000 euros. The countertop is not even ceramic but rather granite.

Are there other options to purchase an affordable kitchen?

Please don’t get me wrong. We could afford such a kitchen. We just don’t see why we should spend 20,000 euros on a few furniture pieces and appliances.

No, Metod is produced in Germany and Italy.

Do YOU think that Nolte manufactures its own furniture?

At least in Germany, according to a documentary that aired a few months ago.

Where is it made? In the end, what really matters is whether I get good value for the money. Our Ikea Metod kitchen, bought in 2017 for 4800 (with installation and delivery), is still absolutely fine today. All drawers operate like on day one. The doors also look the same as on day one. The LED lighting still works like new. The induction cooktop, oven, dishwasher, and extractor fan have no defects. The microwave and refrigerator are also functioning properly. So, in conclusion, good quality, good price. Plus, at least in Lübeck, there is an excellent planning department—friendly, knowledgeable, short delivery times, and, in my opinion, good design. Why should I spend over 10,000? Does the food taste better then?

I think that if you don’t have high expectations or specific individual requirements, you can be satisfied with Ikea. However, I believe that investing 2-3% of the house project budget into the kitchen is reasonable.

We bought locally and went with Häcker. We planned the kitchen ourselves online and then visited two dealers in the area. Upper cabinets with one tall cabinet, sink raised, steam oven above, oven raised with a microwave above. Cooktop 75cm (30 inches) wide—the next one will be 90cm (36 inches). Four wall cabinets that aren’t very deep. Standard stainless steel sink. Cabinets in extra height.

The cost stayed just under four figures without appliances; those were all extra.

When I read about being happy with Ikea, I always wonder if people have recently seen a Metod kitchen in real life.

Before spending 10,000 euros on a kitchen from any discount retailer, I would rather choose Ikea. They offer a guarantee on the fronts, you can reorder parts as needed, and the appliances can be bought online. The Ikea appliances are basically rebranded original Bosch, etc.

And as long as you are still in the shell construction phase, you can plan in 60cm (24 inch) increments, although nowadays it feels like almost everyone has an open kitchen.
